Interview with a Diva: Brigitte Mars

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by Lisa

If you caught the inspired article Brigitte wrote for us several posts back, you will already know what an incredible woman she truly is.  She is a wealth of great, useable information, and she really does walk her talk.  Her daughter is RAINBEAU MARS who many of you have heard of.  Rainbeau is a raw yogini, and a mom herself!  I would love to have her featured sometime for you here on rawmom, but for now, some beautiful pictures of her will just have to do!  In the meantime, enjoy these beautiful words and delcious recipes from the generous spirit which is Brigitte Mars…

brigittePlease tell us about your first experience of hearing about Raw, and who inspired you?  How raw did you go?  How raw are you currently, and how do you maintain it?

In the mid 1970’s, I tried being raw. But back then, the only organic produce available was carrots and apples and most natural food stores didn’t carry produce at all. When I would talk about raw, no one had ever heard of anyone doing it here. “After all”, everyone said, “It’s too cold in Colorado. You need to eat cooked food in a cold climate.” I studied Macrobiotics, Herbal Medicine, Oriental Medicine, Vitamin Therapy, Flower Essences, and Homeopathy. Eventually, I began to teach classes on Natural Medicine institutions such as the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, Naropa University and the Boulder College of Massage.  I became the herbalist for one of the nation’s largest natural food stores, and  for thirteen years and promoted multitudes of remedies, potions, pills and tinctures. I have had a private practice and written scores of magazine articles and several books.

I had always considered our family following a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Though, pretty much all food was cooked, except for the occasional salad and piece of fruit. Organic produce became more available. As the years went by, my lovely children became complicated teens. I surrended to serving whole wheat bagels,  pasta dishes, veggie burgers, homecooked vegetarian chili and other things I was glad they would eat. “At least it’s organic!” I would say to myself.

When Sunflower and Rainbeau were teenagers, they admitted to me that they were sometimes eating meat at their friend’s houses. I wasn’t pleased, but appreciated their honesty and decided that it would be better if I prepared an organic chicken once a week than them eating commercial God knows what God knows where.  This was after my  having been vegetarian for twenty three years. I actually felt better consuming some animal protein and this continued for several years, till I became raw.

Middle aged. I found myself making cakes (with unrefined sugar) once a week, organic chocolate chip cookies, meat, and  quick cooking rice. Always, we included some wild greens and felt healthy about that. However the truth was, I still struggled with acne and was getting heavier and middle-aged pudgy, despite skipping dinners,  and drinking “natural diet shakes”. My bikini days were definitely over.

My husband, Tom Pfeiffer, frequently had digestive problems that caused him sleepless nights and if ginger, umeboshi plum paste or peppermint capsules didn’t help, would resort to over the counter preparations. I had become an expert on remedies, but had not yet figured out why the problems occurred.

rainbeau-mars-picIn 1996, Rainbeau got her first movie role in, The People vs Larry Flynt.  She flew to Memphis and immediately found herself having a great time with Woody Harrelson and his brother, Brett, both of whom were into raw foods, yoga and healing the environment. Rainbeau dropped out of college and soon moved to Hollywood, like many young hopefuls to pursue  dreams of fame and fortune.

Rainbeau and I first saw Juliano in Santa Monica Wild Oats. He gave her a flyer for a raw potluck. Soon,  Rainbeau called us  in Colorado to say, “I’ve gone raw! Juliano is my new housemate. He has written a book called Raw and says, “Get your mom down here. She’ll get raw.” “Not very likely, ” I thought. “I know too much.” I had studied way too long and knew all about “cold, damp spleen,” “excess yin” and how eating tropical fruits can make one “ungrounded and spaced out.”  My big concern was that Rainbeau was getting into anorexia, like the models and actresses one reads about.

Tom and I had a trip to LA planned, to attend Natural Products Expo, the major convention for the natural foods industry. We hoped to talk some sense into her.

Our first night in LA, Juliano was hosting one of his huge raw dinners.  My husband, Tom was apprehensive on how his stomach would handle such fare. We paid a donation and  were  served a delicious raw vegetarian meatloaf with cauliflower mashed potatoes. We drank coconut water. It was all amazingly delicious. There we met David Wolfe, author of The Sunfood Diet and Success System, at the dinner. We had to admit, Rainbeau looked healthier and more beautiful than ever. We weren’t worried, just grateful for Juliano.

The next day, Rainbeau and I left for Anaheim to attend the convention, while Tom had business to attend to in LA. I gave an herb walk  at a botanical garden, and spent time at the allGoode Organic booth, who are the fine people that bought UniTea Herbs, the company Tom and I had started more than sixteen years ago.

Rather than walking through the convention and tasting every free sample of  tofu hot-dog, organic chocolate bars and frozen vegan pizza, I noticed that very little of the “health food” was raw. No wonder we needed to devote one third of the show to vitamins and herbal remedies. “Natural foods” might be good, but they had not brought us perfect health! Macaroni and cheese in a box, though wholewheat and organic, was still processed food.

Friday night, Rainbeau and I were invited to a small party sponsored by  HempNut. TM I had recently written The HempNut Health and Cookbook with Richard Rose. A wonderful young man was playing guitar. We liked what he was singing about. It all rang true. His name was Jeremy Safron. He had been raw for eight years. I bought two copies of his book, The Raw Truth for Rainbeau and myself.

rainbeau-mars-pic-2 Tom and I returned to Boulder. I decided that I would be raw for a year to support my Rainbeau. Surprisingly, Tom loved the food and would sit down to meals saying, “You’re saving me.” His digestion had so much improved. I went through a bit of a detox. My skin broke out worse than it had in years, then got better than ever.

We sponsored David Wolfe to teach a one day workshop in our courtyard. We were amazed how the workshop filled with barely any effort. It was also delightful that making lunch for sixty five people was so easy, when I remembered the stress and toil of a cooked dinner party for ten! A few months into being raw, I really prayed about whether this was the right path for me. My answer was, “Think of The Doctrine of Signatures.” The Doctrine of Signatures is an ancient philosophy that shows how plants speak to us by the way they look, grow, smell and taste.  (For example kidney beans strengthen the kidneys, cauliflower the brain, etc.) It was so simple!  Did I want to feel baked, fried and toasted? Or did I want to feel fresh, alive and vital. The Urantia Book says that Adam and Eve (not the first humans -that’s another story) were raw foodists.

“While cooking was universally employed outside the immediate Adamic sector of Eden, there was no cooking in Adam’s household. They found their foods-fruits, nuts and cereals-ready prepared and ripened.”  The Urantia Book.

Tom and I both attended a workshop given by Viktoria and Igor Boutenko, authors of The Raw Family. Igor gave us the most powerful massages. We could feel such amazing movement of energy. We were blessed to have the Boutenkos stay at out house during their workshop. No spaced out deficiency there!

My teaching of herbal medicine has changed. I wanted to talk about raw foods. I still love herbs and have found many of my herbal allies make great salad additions and fresh green juices.

Two years have passed. When I went to Anaheim’s Natural Product’s Expo this year, my friends wanted to know, “What have you been doing? You look younger! More slender! Your skin is great!”

It amazes me how something so simple, time saving, and money conserving  isn’t what everyone is doing. Now a trip to the grocery store yields four bags of groceries for $100 rather than one or two bags. We feel great. Sign me up. I’m sticking with the program. Every day I wake up feeling blessed to be raw and wonder why it took so long to find it again. I’m glad I studied so many other things. My horizons have been expanded all around the globe, studying the medicine of a multitude of cultures that are not all that healthy. Such a beautiful simple truth, to return to raw.

Can you please offer us a few of your fave recipes?

SUNFLOWER PÂTÉ
1 1/2 cups raw sunflower seeds, soaked overnight, then allowed to sprout for 3 hours
1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup tamari or 1 teaspoon sea salt
3 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 clove garlic
1 teaspoon sliced fresh ginger
Run the above ingredients through a food processor. Serve on sandwiches or on salad. Add some chopped celery for a tuna-salad substitute. Excellent on sandwiches or to top a salad.

FLAX CRACKERS
I once threw a soggy flax cracker out in the yard, and it grew in to hundreds of flax plants. Now that’s live food!
2 cups flax seeds
4 cups water
1/4 cup dried kelp
Soak the seeds in the water 15 minutes. Stir in the dried kelp. Spread the mixture onto three solid dehydrator sheets. Dehydrate for 4 hours. Remove the dehydrator sheets and turn over the crackers. Continue dehydrating until they are crisp (about 4 to 6 hours). When dry, the crackers will keep indefinitely.
Makes 2-3 trays of crackers.
Variations on Flax Crackers
Any of the following can be substituted for kelp in Flax Crackers:
Sliced bananas
Sliced apples
Raisins
Cinnamon
Celtic salt
Chopped tomatoes
Corn cut from the cob
Chopped red peppers
Chopped onions
Chili powder
Basil
Chives
Cilantro
Garlic

DRIED FRUIT JAM
Jam on sprouted crackers with almond butter, anyone?
1/2 cup raisins, soaked overnight
1/2 cup dried figs, soaked overnight
1/2 cup dried apricots, soaked overnight
Remove the fruit from the soaking water and place in a blender; reserve the soaking water. Add a bit of the water, pulse until well mixed, and keep adding water until the mixture achieves a jamlike consistency. Store in the refrigerator, where the jam will keep for about 2 weeks.
Makes about 3 cups.

APRICOT PUDDING
Nothing is easier. Try garnishing the dish with pine nuts.
1 cup dried apricots, soaked 4 hours in 1 cup water
Place the apricots in a food processor and puree. Serve in cups.
Makes 2 servings.

BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING
The ultimate comfort food can be extraordinary.
1 cup dried apricots, soaked overnight in water (reserve water)
2 bananas, peeled
8 dates, soaked 20 minutes
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup raw almond butter (available at natural foods stores)
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and puree.
Makes 4 servings.

CAROB PUDDING
1/2-cup raw almonds soaked overnight. Rinse in the morning.
2 ripe bananas
1/2-cup water
2 tablespoons carob powder
1/2 cup pitted dates
Blend all ingredients together in a blender or food processor till smooth. Garnish with a mint leaf or strawberry slice.

HEALTHY FUDGE
1 cup tahini or almond butter
1/2 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons chocolate powder
1 tablespoon fresh chopped mint leaves
!/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
Mix all the ingredients together and roll into balls. Roll in sesame seeds or coconut and chill. Coconut can be colored red by mixing with a bit of beet juice.

STUFFED DATES
Stuff pitted dates with raw almond butter or tahini. Makes a great substitute for chocolate!

Interview with a Diva: Rory Freedman

Friday, March 27th, 2009 by Lisa

When I read the book SKINNY BITCH, by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin , I was pleased to find hard-hitting, no b.s. info and accounts of what is happening with our food supply, animals, and just how we lull ourselves with falsehoods and sabotage our own health.  I applaud Rory Freedman and her partner for being so clever with their title and writing-style which is provocative and edgy.  They have done much to bring the message of raw foods and compassion to animals to the masses, and I thank them both!

I recently had the opportunity to ask a few questions of Rory Freedman and I’m thrilled to be able to share this interview with everyone!  Without further ado…

g-photo-credit-lelah-foster-rory-freedmanRory, I loved your book and I can’t wait to learn a little more about you!   Briefly tell us about your raw journey, who inspired you, and about how raw you are.

Tim VanOrden is a friend of mine, and I’m blown away by his accomplishments as a raw athlete. I’m also in constant awe of all the amazing food he makes. Kris Carr is one of my dearest, soul-sister friends and she inspires me in every way, shape, and form. She’s a beacon of beauty, light, and laughter. And in general, I’m envious of so many people in the raw community who are living the life, as I’m not yet there.

You are so gorgeous! Do you have any raw beauty secrets you could share with our readers?

I would imagine that all your readers know more raw beauty secrets than I do! But one of my favorites is coconut oil-when I’m feeling really dry, I use it as face cream, body lotion, and hair moisturizer. (But then I have to hide from my dogs.)

The one product that I can’t live without isn’t raw, but it’s really natural and lovely: Dirty Hippie Soaps’ Kissin Stick (Herbie flavor). It is literally the best lip balm I’ve ever used in my entire life. I’m obsessed with it and want everyone else to be, too.

skinnybitch-book-coverI know from your books that when you eat cooked food, it is vegan and quite healthy; do have any desire to go more raw with your diet, and do you have any other health and wellness goals?

Compared to the real world, yes, my diet is healthy. But compared to the raw world, I could improve a lot. If I were being my best, healthiest food-self, I’d eat more raw salads and would juice greens daily.

Talking to women at signings and events, what is the main reaction you get about your work?

The main reaction is that because the book was written in an informal, irreverent way, it is a fast, funny read, easy to understand, and “life changing.”  People are permanently transformed after reading about factory farms and slaughterhouses.

How do you juggle all that you have on your plate now with the success of the books and has it been a major change for you, and what is the most challenging?

Time and stress management are tough ones for me. Some days there are a million meetings, emails, phone calls, interviews, and deadlines, and I get stressed out and overwhelmed. And then on top of that I feel guilty, like I’m not being a good dog mom. Remembering to stay Zen and present is a constant battle. I can usually decompress on my daily hike with my dogs, and my girlfriends and I send each other daily gratitude lists, which is also a big help. But overall, I really can’t complain. I have the best friends in the world, a job I love, and the understanding that the success itself doesn’t mean anything.

Competition in the industry is crazy- how did you know how to get your manuscript to the right publishers?

And what do you think is the reason behind the success of your books besides its timely message, ie is it marketing, promotion, the right cover….? Please share your insights.

Skinny Bitch Journal CoverThe Universe was behind me every step of the way. Probably days after having the idea to write Skinny Bitch, I had dinner with some old friends who I hadn’t seen or spoken to in years. I told them I wanted to write a book and they told me they had just gotten a publishing deal and that I should try submitting a proposal to their literary agent. The book, Writer’s Market, was invaluable in teaching me what to submit to the agent and how to do it. Once I got representation, the literary agent handled everything from there.

As for the book’s success, certainly the cheap, provocative title gets consumers’ attention, especially since so many women struggle with their weight. But the real draw is the compelling information inside. Most people have no idea about nutrition; many think diet soda is healthy! To learn some fundamental things about the foods they eat every day-it’s shocking and motivating, and people are keen on sharing what they’ve learned with their friends and loved ones.

What do you see as women’s biggest obstacles with eating healthy- and how can we overcome them?

There are so many different obstacles. Some women have the information and desire to eat well, but time is an issue. Other women are ruled by their emotions, and they eat to feel good, to blanket feelings, or to numb out completely. And others are just dangerously clueless. I think the key for overcoming any obstacle, food-related or otherwise, is to identify your weakness and decide how committed you are to beating it. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Do you have a spiritual practice?

Oh, I am constantly practicing not beating myself up for not keeping up with my spiritual practices. Yoga, meditation, and journaling are all available to me when I am available to them.

I’m easily distracted and somewhat unstructured, so I like little doses of lots of things. I’m consistent in doing what I feel that day, that moment. Whether it’s listening to a Kabbalah CD, zoning out to Prana music, doing five minutes of yoga, dancing in my apartment, affirming my intentions, or weeping while making my gratitude list, I indulge my spiritual self regularly.

How much do other lifestyle factors like exercise, fresh air, sleep, etc factor in?  How much sleep do you get a night?  And how late do you typically eat at night?

If I have a book deadline, I can be a really naughty girl and stay up until 4am and sleep until noon the next day. It’s hard, but I try not to feel bad about being a night owl in general. My mom is a night owl, her mom was a night owl, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been one. (My mom recently told me she used to keep my sister and me awake late at night as babies so we’d be more likely to sleep later in the mornings and let her sleep.) On a typical night, I’ll eat as late as midnight, go to bed around 2am, and get up around 10am. I know it sounds like a fraternity guy’s schedule, but it works for me. I’m not big on eating in the morning. I like to get my 7-8 hours of sleep, go hiking with the dogs (and then maybe go to the gym or yoga), and then eat fruit for breakfast around 1 or 2pm when I get home.

Anything else you would like to add, advice to women in general about diet or success or living with purpose…?

Whatever you want to do, be, or have, it is possible!

Guilt is entirely useless.

Eat well, enjoy food, and love your body no matter what!

Our March Break Cleanse Extravaganza!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 by Lisa

yogaleoneLast post I told you we had already begun our March Break cleanse.  I left off telling you for some added motivation I was heading to the big city to take in the sites while we all continued our intention to do a cleanse.  My reasoning is that even though we eat a very high-raw regime while at home, because the kids are in school and socializing with friends and attending birthday parties, etc., it isn’t always as ideal as I would like.

So, every school holiday, we take several days to wind down, to re-connect, and tune-in to each other, and ourselves.  Using food is a great tool to help this process along.  And this year, after the usual yoga sessions, tubing, hikes, bike rides and visits with friends, we all thought it would be so fun to take a trip 1 hour south to the city to round out our little holiday with some cultural stimulation to go with our cleanse.

kids-dino-diggI like to occasionally do little water or green juice fasts and in the Spring and Autumn longer ones, but with children, that isn’t really necessary or practical.  So instead, what we do is have days where I only serve fresh fruit, green juices, green smoothies, and big salads.  This way, the kids aren’t really hungry, and they are getting great nutrition, plus, a little rest from the nuts and mixed combinations of usual raw gourmet fare like raw burgers or nori rolls, etc.

We completed our 3 days at home just doing juices, smoothies and bitter salads (arugula, radicchio, dandelion greens with avocado) and the morning of our trip, we all juiced and packed enough green juice (dandelion, romaine, cucumber, celery and apple) and salad for the whole day.  On the 5th day, we ate fresh mangosteen and coconut and drank coconut water plus our usual lemon-ginger water.  For a late lunch at 4pm, we headed over to our fave raw restaurant- LIVE!  Ohhhhh, I just love Jennifer Italiano’s food!  To be perfectly honest, I am reeeeeeeallt picky!  Yet, I have enjoyed everything I have ever tried at her foodbar.  My kids were so hungry by the time we got there because we had been to the museum for 5 hours looking at dinosaurs and ancient Egyptian exhibits, and the smells were so tantalizing!  Jennifer also offers a few healthy cooked food options like brown rice dishes, and my boys nearly caved and went for those- but I firmly reminded them that we were still on our cleanse and they really had to choose something raw.  One chose the large mixed green with kale salad and a ginger garlic dressing, and the other chose a veggie wrap with a dehydrated burrito that was a dark red color.  My husband had a wrap and I had a salad.  And we all had desserts- Ok, that was NOT on the cleanse menu LOL!

durian-feverWe all wished we had ordered about double that amount of food as everything tasted sooooooo good!  But actually, by the time we were finished, we were full and satisfied.  We had an Art Gala of 300 International artists to attend at 6, so off we went very happy indeed!  We must have all been radiating a lot of joy, because when we attended the gala which was PACKED with people, just as we were standing in one of the lines to pay, my husband was tapped on the shoulder and a gentleman handed him FREE TICKETS for our whole family!  We couldn’t believe our good fortune!  I looked around in the crowd and found this man walking with a woman, and realised she was the lady I had assisted in the parking lot several minutes before…it was all so sweet!  I even bumped into several people I hadn’t seen in ages, and a client who had attended 2 of my raw recipe workshops with her husband.

When we returned to our hotel room at 9:30, we had all worked up quite the appetite…so although this isn’t the best idea because of how late it was, we broke open one of our DURIAN and had a little feast!

(Our young photographer Liam shot this little vid of us all feasting away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eZoRQ5VWwc )

I find when one is raw, going with the flow and meeting your body’s needs and desires is healthier than constantly stifling them…

sleeping-car-angelsThe next day we visited a Raw Market Fair at super Sprouts and saw our dear friend Wayne Gendel from foreverheathy.net who had a booth there, a little raw waldorf girl who was selling her wonderful poetry books for $3, and Groovinda from Aum My Goddess- she has the coolest clothing line made of hemp and cotton original designs- and several other raw friends and had a wonderful time!  We nibbled on bags of sunflower sprouts and green juices served there until the kids got bored about 3 hours in. After more fun going to the HUGE super health food store THE BIG CARROT and buying some raw honey and organic apples and bee pollen and nori sheets (my kids LOVE to nibble on them) we headed back to the hotel around 8 for a salt-water swim.  Our 3 day holiday and 6 day cleanse was fun, refreshing and a wonderful bonding experience that my family all really enjoyed.  Bless!

Seeing the Connection

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009 by Linda

By Linda Hansen

fairygirlPeople often comment to me that I have very good looking children, and my reply is something to the effect that we always try to eat healthy.  I usually get a puzzled look.  What is the connection?  That is the problem.  Our health is in a great part, a function of what we do, and what we put into ourselves.  In addition, our health is not some dark secret deep in the hidden recesses away from sight.  It is reflected in the brightness of our eyes, the color of our cheeks, the softness of our skin, the readiness of our smile, and so many other things we see every day we look in the mirror.  Some say we shouldn’t focus on beauty, and I agree.  It is not the do all and end all by any means, but it is an indicator.  If we see dark circles under our eyes, it is a sign that we have something to discover about ourselves, and to work on. We must learn to make the connection between what we put in and what we get out.

Next time you go to the grocery store, take a little time to see what people have in their carts.  Look into the carts, and look at the people.  Look at their faces, look at their bodies, and their energy.  It is easy to see.   I see many sick people buying health destroying food items at my grocery store.  I talk with my children about this connection over and over. We have loved ones who have suffered with their health. We talk about their choices.  I feel it is absolutely imperative for my children to see that the lifestyle choices they make for themselves are powerful for their own lives.

What if we don’t see our children care about what they eat or do as we wish they would?  First, we ask ourselves a few questions.  Are we doing a do as I say, not as I do?  Are there things we are eating and drinking that obviously do not build health, and we wouldn’t tolerate for our children to take, but we excuse for ourselves?  Are we complaining about healthy eating?  Do we have only healthy selections available for them at home?  Is there enough variety available to keep it interesting and fun? Are we listening to their likes and dislikes?  If they are growing, or especially with teenagers, is there actually enough prime food around?  They can eat a lot, especially boys.

My Grandmother used to talk constantly.  And she talked to me about food and health more that I wanted to hear when I was a girl.  I remember wishing she would just let me eat my chocolate cake or drink my soda in peace.  But you know, she had a real affect on me.  Now it is my passion.  When she passed on at ninety-four, I was the one who inherited her water distiller, her Vitamix, and her library of health books with her handwritten notes, and I remember what she told me about the connection between our choices and our lives.

Healthy eatingWhat works best for me is to have a lot of fresh produce on the counter.  Today, I have baskets with avocados, lemons, and sweet potatoes, onions and garlic, and fresh ginger, and organic apples.  In jars of water are standing bunches of kale, parsley, and cilantro. On a shelf above, are clear canisters of nuts and seeds, and there is another row of seaweeds and herbs. Everything is in sight. In the icebox, are carrots, a box of spring mix, collards, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and celery.  I often have a pot of lentils and one of cooked quinoa or something similar available, and we each assemble our own dishes according to what is most appealing to us that day.  I think that is very important.  Each person has his own needs, and appetite.  If we have a variety of healthy foods available, it works to start with the most appealing food, and eat that until something else presents itself as more appealing.

Parents often fuss that their children don’t eat enough of different foods, and set themselves up for problems with the child, trying to force him to eat something when he has no appetite for it.  Be comforted, studies have shown that when  children are presented with a variety of healthy foods and are allowed to eat as their appetite dictates, over time, they will get a balance of nutrients.  My suggestions are: First, let the child get hungry.  Food tastes better when we are hungry.  Second, let the child taste it.  A large serving can be overwhelming, even to adults.  Let him decide when he is full.  It is no problem as long as there is not junk around that will take its place as soon as you leave the table, if that is where you eat.

I try to do this with my older children, also.  I have two who drive an hour to University every day, leaving early in the morning, and returning home sometimes after dark.  They are usually in a rush to get on the road, and they have to be able to grab stuff they can pull out of their packs to nibble on during the day.  I try to have something ready for them when they get home.  If there are enough choices, and everything is good for them, it is usually successful.  I think the only reason this works is because they know that what they do to take care of their health makes a big difference.  I have been talking about this with them for years.  When I homeschooled them, I read them articles, and abstracts of nutrition studies ad nauseum.  When I had health challenges, they saw me up the nutrition for myself.  They saw the foods in our house gradually change and refine, and they know why.  And now, it has come full circle.  My daughter especially often didn’t seem very interested in listening to me read endless studies aloud.  But now she and her brother, are both studying the science of it, and can be caught reading the chemistry of enzymes or cellular water absorption just for fun, and that makes it all worthwhile.

The F-Word: FOOD!

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009 by Lisa

hpim37561The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself.  GOETHE

What do you eat?  What do you like to eat?  What do you deny yourself?  What games go on inside your head about your food.  Games, or tyranny?  Do you eat in fear?  Do you eat with guilt?  Do you feel afraid, ashamed, bad?

Last time I talked about a guilty pleasure of mine, and how we tend to judge ourselves and each other…but it’s just so strange that we do this to ourselves.  I mean, no one can control our thoughts.  No one can think for us. It’s all up to us, yet, we still think in ways that hurt ourselves.

I recall when I decided to ‘go raw’ some of the games I played with myself- and they were pretty harsh:  you can have this only if you wait until Friday…you can’t have that anymore, even though you love it…you better not eat that- at least not until the kids are in bed so they don’t see you…how can you eat that when you don’t even believe in that anymore- what is wrong with you…?  Any ‘closet cooked eaters’out there?

bunny-ear-carrotsOn and on it went.  I was my own worst enemy.  I doubt any raw guru or coach out there would have been so hard on me.  I was so determined to ‘change’.  I practically threw my entire life into a tizzy over food.  It wasn’t good enough that I change- I needed my entire family to change too!

My husband and I had many fights over mealtime.  I wanted his ’support’ and he just wanted to eat!   I felt he was ’sabotaging’ me and all my efforts.  I used to work so hard making raw cookies and little treats to tempt our kids with.  They were so young that they actually took to everything quite well- at least the sweet stuff…But then in Mr Man would walk with half of his hot chocolate- or a donut or something- and he would leave it lying around, and the kids would find it and ask to have it.  He would say ’sure’, I would say ‘no!’ and I was always the BAD GUY!  Eventually I would give in and let them share the little bit that he had left, but the damage would be done.  Because after trying that little goodie with all the sugar and addictive chemicals on their pure little taste buds, they would no longer want MY healthy, raw treats anymore!

I know some of you reading this are in a similar situation.  I feel your angst.  I know how much you want the best for your family!  I doubt I would have gone to the lengths I did if I were single…I felt a HUGE responsibility to give my kids the best I could.  I looked up to Victoria Boutenko so much- she had done so well by her family and everybody not only benefited but came to really appreciate it her efforts.

cauliflower-crouton-spinach-saladShe is a shero!  Her family are role models.  I have learned so much from them as we all have.  And I bless her everyday and have a heart filled with gratitude for this path and all the learning I have been so blessed to experience.

AND, not ‘but’, its all perfect.  There is so much more to this food game than it seems.  It goes very deep.  From my past of living on the streets for a while after my mom died when I was only 16- and going hungry, there are issues that I can’t just ‘will away’.  We ALL have our stuff, and we cannot just ’stuff it’ with food- or be disciplined like I tried to be, and deny ourselves into submission.  This isn’t HEALTHY on any level.  And I am sure you feel as I do, raw isn’t a rawligion, and the percentage isn’t the point- having a healthy body temple is.

I have made tremendous progress.  I am so happy about it!  But there is still late night eating and little reminders here and there that crop up to let me know that I am still human.  I don’t think we ever really perfect our diet.  All we can ask for is progress.  Today, I am ecstatic about the progress I have made for myself and in my family.  And I joyfully look forward to even more, all in divine timing.  We don’t have to stress-out over food.  We can embrace the changes we desire, and move towards them by honouring where we are and where we would like to be.

hpim2225I hope all the support and tools and tips and recipes and interviews and information that you find here is helpful!  That is my sincerest wish for everyone who stops by.  And also, that you would be loving and compassionate with yourselves, your family and your progress.  Food isn’t an enemy.  It’s a mirror.  We need to love our own unique reflection.  And allow ourselves the space to grow at our own pace. It will happen.  It is happening.

It is ‘March Break’ and so I have convinced my family that going on a wee cleanse would be a really swell idea and a jolly good time, hehe!  And we actually finished DAY 3 today- but the peanut gallery is getting restless…so, as a BIG reward for all their efforts, and to keep us all motivated, we are heading to the big city tomorrow for a couple of days to buy lots of durian, continue with our green juices and bitter weed salads, and take in the sites of the MARKETS, CHINATOWN, MUSEUM, SCIENCE CENTRE, and ART GALLERY!

Daydream Believer

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 by stacey

Hello Raw Momsicles!

Yar, it’s been a few weeks since I last posted. Let’s just say that life got in the way. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? We are only human, non? Despite our best efforts to be Supermommies?

alison-picThis week, I want to introduce you to someone special. For about the last three years I’ve been following the blog of a lovely English girl called Alison, an exquisitely blessed writer who is skilled at creating utter gorgeousness in her life. She’s a mum, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a thoroughly authentic person who isn’t afraid to show that she’s human.

Alison writes a blog called Brocante Home, a blog that follows her life and celebrates, among other things, ‘Vintage Housekeeping’. I wouldn’t say that vintage is really my style (although, do I have a style? Hmmm…), but I love the premise behind Alison’s work - that life should be beautiful (whatever style that means for you) and real, and that home is the sacred place where our dreams, and those of our families, should be nurtured.

She has a unique way of looking at the world, and often her words leave me breathless, swept away by their sheer beauty. She really could be a poet, and her many blogging fans insist that she needs to get on with that book she keeps putting off.

Recently, Alison began a group called the Vintage Housekeeper’s Circle. Once subscribed (for a very small monthly amount - less than the cost of a magazine), you have access to the forum, and Alison sends out week-daily emails to all subscribers. Sometimes these contain handy house-cleaning tips (usually eco-friendly), and tips on living a beautiful life.

Alison has given me permission to share one of her recent Vintage Housekeeper emails with you (see below), called “Daydream Believer” - I just love its message. I hope you do, too, and that it reminds you that you need to ‘fill your own well’ before you can give your best ‘you’ to others.

See you next week (promise!)…

Love Jo

Happy Monday Darling…

…because yes indeed a bright new week is upon us and no amount of PMT or financial worry is going to get us down today…

A long long time ago, when nobody had heard of the internet and my frizzy mop wasn’t spiked with grey, I ran a programme in the inner city of Liverpool based on the premise that “Home” should be central to the lives of all that live in them and that more than that home should act as a springboard for the women and children who lived in them: a springboard to creativity, to certainty, to confidence, ideas and cultural freedom…

Most of us are lucky enough to be in a much more privileged position than those women the course was designed for. But while we may be both educationally and financially more comfortable, we rarely facilitate all that we need (and instinctively offer our children) to spark our own creativity at home: to make home the place where our ideas are born, nurtured and more than that offered house room, for both play and development.

Instead we fill the house with distracting noise, allow our time to be squandered upon thankless tasks, fill bookshelves with books that do not speak to our soul, do what’s right, arrange houses that keep up with the Jones, maintain guest rooms that are rarely used, polish tables in dining rooms we use on Christmas Day, develop tidy-ness obsessions that compromise our sanity, spend needless hours ferrying children to and from (unnecessary) organised activities, sit staring into space because our partners like company when they watch TV, don’t keep journals in case they are discovered and worse, mocked, clean when we should be resting, sleep when we could be writing, let children’s possessions rule our homes, chatter on the phone when we have better things to do and let our internet fixation dictate the way we live our life.

daydream-believer-picIt won’t do, you know? None or even one of the above cast of bad behavior will do. For every box we tick, a little bit of our creative soul floats away, because it cannot assert itself in the constant noise - because it knows, but somehow cannot get you to listen, that the dusting will still be there after you have done that tiny little bit of sewing, or writing, or cooking, or whatever it is that is calling your name - because you are not the resident taxi-driver - because you can use your time however you wish and that more than that, even in the hullabalub of family life, you have the right to privacy. To draw, to dream or to chronicle the inner workings of your mind. You have that right, just as you have the right to create a space on the household bookshelves to hold those books drawing you a map to who you want to be.

We don’t have to have houses that look like every other on the street. Even if we maintain a modicum of outer respectfulness by not painting the house sky blue pink, we are absolutely allowed to do whatever we want inside and that means never fearing that the dining room police are on the way after you have shocked your Mother In Law into an early grave by converting it into a studio so full of all those things that make your heart sing that you truly wouldn’t care now if Christmas Dinner had to be eaten on trays in front of the Queen’s speech.

And you know what else? We don’t have to make a career out of cleaning our own home. Though it pains me to say it, because I do love a good scrub, it is she who sits amongst other women listing her “jobs” either done or (horrors!) left undone who bores us all senseless…

Today carve out a space for your dreams. Type “sewing room”, “desk” or “library” into Flickr and be inspired by other peoples spaces. Start a brand new journal. Switch off the phone, the tv and the internet. No, really. Switch off the internet. While it may provide you with endless inspiration, it compromises who you authentically are. Take down a picture and hang up another pinboard abundant with inspiration instead. Say no to driving anyone anywhere just for the day. Write a poem instead of cleaning the bath. Allocate a reading chair and fill a basket with reading related loveliness alongside it. Claim the kitchen table as the new home of your gorgeous little business. Dance!

Do it! Stop reading about it and create a house that sparks your imagination. Live, laugh and dream great big enormous dreams.

You are safe, Sweetheart. You are home.

Time to log off, Sweetie… I dare you!

If You Have a KID, You Have a GURU!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 by Lisa

wildLest you become as a little child…

Studies show that by the age of 5, kids have been told in one way or another ‘NO’ 80,000 times, and ‘YES’ in one way or another 5,000 times!  Talk about overwhelming negative conditioning to think and feel in limited ways… kids LAUGH on average 400 times a day- grown-ups choke out less than 25 daily.

Western society has everyone focused on our IQ, intelligence quotient.  But there is something which can determine our potential for success and happiness in life which is by far more important and telling; it is our EQ- EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT. How we express or suppress our emotions has far more consequences than intellect alone.

laughyI believe kids are just NATURALLY connected to the Source, to the power grid of Life.

Aren’t kids just so FILLED with DESIRE, PERSISTENCE, CURIOSITY, VITALITY, WONDERMENT, FOGIVENESS, ACCEPTANCE, JOY- all the characteristics of a vibrant life- so much so, that sometimes we can hardly stand them! LOL!

ALL kids innately have this unlimited vitality.  All kids are so ALIVE and ENTHUSIASTIC and INVOLVED in life- UNTIL those wonderful ways of being that they naturally posses and express get shut down.  Parents, school, doctors and other ‘authorities’ believe that children need to be ‘taught’.  I am clear that I will learn more from my kids than I could ever hope to teach them; hence my documentary’s name, RAISING CHILDREN RAISES US.  Four, five and six year olds are expressing wonderful ways of being that we have most likely already had bred, beaten, educated, programmed and shamed out of us.  Even if you observe a baby, you will see when they start to want solids, and if you give them raw foods instead of those dead packaged grain mushes, they won’t spit it out!  We THINK we have to teach kids about healthy food- that is only actually true if we didn’t feed them a natural raw diet right from the beginning!

myAbout 10 years ago a friend had the pleasure of hearing a talk by Randy Ward and she was so fired up and shared some of the things she learned from him.  He said many profound things and he said what he learned came not from books or adults, but from observing children.  He said children don’t start out in this world with fear- that we teach them that.  “don’t climb the tree or you will fall”  “don’t cross the street or you will get hit by a car” etc etc etc.

Of course we need to be there for our kids to ensure their wellbeing, but how often do we instil fear into our children in the name of ’safety’?  “Life is a terminal condition- nobody gets out of here alive!” and do we really want our outrageously ALIVE little poppets to just crawl safely to death…? What does it really do to a young child’s psyche to constantly emphasise ’staying safe’? If you ask seniors in our society what would they do if they could live their life over again, they all say ‘Take more risks’.  Aren’t children already so adept at that?  And doesn’t the Universe reward boldness? We actually live in a SAFE Universe.  But probably no one has ever told you that.  My mother told me basically the same thing your mother told you…

imgp1055A great teacher once said “Ask, and you shall receive”…we have FREE WILL so our rights and desires aren’t intruded upon.  Realising this, I finally got over my phobia of driving and now drive with effortlessness and calm confidence.  I now ask for and claim Divine protection in and around my car as soon as I put the key in the ignition, and in 11 years have never had an incident, and I know I never will.  My children hear me say ‘white light’ which is my shorthand for asking for and invoking that safety.  We can focus on what we fear and therefore attract it, or we can focus on what we want and therefore attract that!  WORRY, DOUBT, GUILT AND FEAR ARE A PRAYER FOR WHAT YOU DON’T WANT!  The Universe literally rearranges itself to accommodate what you focus on!

firstSee Moms, you gorgeous group of gals, we are blessed beyond belief with these precious young souls in our home.  We can learn more from them than any seminar, book or retreat if only we could get out of our heads and stop thinking they are the only ones that need to learn stuff here.  Just learning stuff isn’t necessarily going to impact anyone in a fundamental way unless it can affect a shift in their being.  Of course we have more experience which can serve our children, but they have youthful reminders of a fresh perspective and a heart/spirit-centered orientation to life which we can learn from.  The power is not in our head, it’s in our being.  You can teach what you know, but you duplicate who you BE.  Who you ARE speaks louder than anything you will ever say.

Let us teach what children need most from us- our faith in them, our approval of their emotions (though we may need to help them limit their actions), our acceptance of who they fundamentally ARE, and our DELIGHT in that!  How much more than that are they really REALLY needing from us, anyway?

And may we learn from our children all the great stuff that any guru worth their salt teaches: wonderment, humility, being in the moment, forgiveness, non-judgement, reverence for life and JOY!!!!

You have to HAVE it before you can GET it!

Friday, March 13th, 2009 by Lisa

hpim2421“We aren’t here to see through each other, but to see each other through” Anon

What do you want?  On a superficial level, what do you want?  How about on a deep level, what do you want there?  What do you want in your work?  Your family?  Your state of health?  Wealth? In any given situation in your life RIGHT NOW~ what do you want?

I’ll tell you what I want- I want it ALL!  I want health, happiness, confident, capable and happy kids, inner peace, world-peace, beauty- inside-out, success, a husband who thrives,  perhaps some new art supplies or even to create a painting that would move the world like the Mona Lisa did…and a new Gucci bag wouldn’t hurt!

(Oooooh, their heirloom quality absolutely fascinates me!  Some girls like shoes, some girls like lipstick, some girls like food; me, I like handbags, and Gucci is the ultimate!  The structure of each bag with zippers that smoooooothly operate even on the thousandth time, and hardware that feels softer than silk- they are like Art or Architecture to me and represent elegance, glamour, culture and class.  I would rather have a Gucci bag than a car.  I would rather have a Gucci bag than a vacation.  In my wildest FANTASIES they would design a bag after me/for me, like they did with Jackie O, only my bag would be made not out of leather, but cruelty-free canvas or straw with bamboo or wood handles with a relaxed and sensual shape, and an ‘every woman’s’ budget.  Ahhh, sweet lover of mine, its nice to dream!) her-love-is-a-force-of-nature

Did I lose ya on the last one..?  Did you want to judge that  wish list, especially the Gucci goochee- goo part..?  Does that seem just so superficial and un-Spiritual, whatever THAT means, hehe, and so NOT ‘rawmom’?…Its ok; in fact its perfect!  In the privacy of your own mind, you just saw something about yourself- and it isn’t that you may have judged me.  It’s that you judged YOU.

If you lay that trip on the world, if you project judgement on life about what someone else thinks or does, if you cut off anyone’s beingness and can’t bless them however they are- its just a reflection of what you do to YOURSELF.  Whatever we ‘project’ onto someone, just like a film projector, what we are doing is creating ‘out there’ our movie.

And whenever we are upset with anyone, it is always because they are not playing the part we think they should be playing!

It’s really a good idea the saying ‘do unto others what you’d have done unto yourself’ because in a very literal sense, what you do unto others you will do unto yourself.  If you judge others harshly about their diet for example, is just a reflection of how stressed and rigid you are about your own diet, despite how much healthier your diet may be.  Until you are OK with where other people are at with their journey, you won’t be OK with where you are, even if you feel you are farther along then them, it still won’t be enough for you.

untitledLife is just a reflection of our thoughts. We always seem to think things come from outside of ourselves, but actually it’s the opposite- ‘as the roots, so the fruits’.  Take abundance. People want abundance and imagine that it comes from the outer realms- money, success, health, material wealth, etc.  Abundance isn’t something that comes to you- abundance is something that comes from you.  Its all there, inside.

When you realise whatever is lacking in any situation YOU COULD BRING IT, you will never be disappointed again.  You want more love? Bring more love.  You want better friendships? Bring true friendship.  You want harmony, bring that to all situations.  You want laughter, LAUGH!  HAHAHAHAHA!

And what’s wrong with wanting money and nice things- nothing!  This world is one of TOTAL ABUNDANCE.  Just look around in Nature- do you see one or two leaves on a tree, or too many to count?  There are 300 different species of avocados!  Everywhere you look, its obvious this is an abundant Universe.  To assume we are any different is arrogant.  To judge what we or anyone chooses is disillusionment.

happy-unto-herselfBut what is always important to understand is anything we could want is within us already. And anything we want is ours to have, no judgement, and when we know we actually are already whatever what we want represents to us, that is when it just comes straight to us without any effort at all.  Like a magnet, we attract exactly what we are.  So come on my lovelies, stop pinching off the flow of life by contracting-up your marvellous self in petty judgements of yourself or others, and DARE TO DREAM!  To DESIRE!  To truly LIVE!

Let’s accept ourselves wherever we are, and how I am suggesting we achieve that is to begin by accepting others exactly as they are, and as we just stop judging others, we will automatically stop judging ourselves.  And vice versa.  So observe and allow what you want, how you think, what you eat, and where you are at. And just let it be as it is.  Maybe even laugh, and have a giggle and enjoy all the ironies, idiosyncrasies and contradictions that make up a full and vital person- in fact, REVEL in it, if you will! If we can sit in any moment and be comfortable there, we will allow others to do the same.  What a profoundly loving and empowering space to raise our children in.  Including our own child-within.  Bless what you want!

Xo Shannon

Ps

Well, I don’t know about the Gucci bag showing up any time soon, but I have been painting lately so here’s a couple of my latest creations- In-Joy!

BIG ME, little c

Saturday, March 7th, 2009 by Lisa

221OOOOOOOh my little Chikas, snuggle in for a juicy one today!  If you’re anything like me you looooove to share a good thing; well I’m sharing!  Ya’ll know by now the Cancer scare my husband and I are currently facing…and btw, for the record, we are no longer referring to it like that, but rather as can-sir!  Because YES SIR, HE CAN! And Luke has come up with something even more powerful- he refers to it as c-ancer…get it?  ‘See answer‘.  That epiphany came from within.  All answers do. Meditate on that one a while…

Besides, it always amazes me how we make mountains out of mole hills anyway- I mean sure, ‘diseases’ can be life-threatening and all that, but even they, diseases, are just dis-ease- and we can remedy that!  If you are sitting in a chair and suddenly feel uncomfortable, do ya just stay like that? Hoping ’somebody will ‘fix’ you? Getting all mad and depressed at God and life?  Of course not; you simply shift into a more comfy position.  Dis-ease is an uncomfy position your body has been in too long and wants a shift from.

luke-red-mask1Well, I see can-sir like that.  I don’t give it a capitol letter because I really don’t give it much prominence at all.  It is an alarm clock letting us know its time to shift some things.  This is NOT to make light of anyone’s situation!  We have all known and loved people who have suffered the ravages of this dis-ease as it progressed.  My heart goes out to anyone, anywhere who is scared, in pain, suffering for ANY reason.  But this is just how ME AND MY MAN chooses to cope.  We are needing to pull out all the treasures from this journey that we possibly can!

I don’t know where you are on your Spiritual path, but usually people attracted to the Raw life are open to more esoteric ideas…and it kinda amazes me when we believe in God, or a ‘higher power’ or ‘cosmic energy’ or ‘miracles’ or ‘divine intervention’ or ‘Universal Law’ and yet we tremble so quickly in the face of any storm.  If God is the ‘creator’ and ’source’ and all that, I don’t think s/he is saying, ‘Gee, I’d love to help, but this is a toughie- my hands are tied.’  It isn’t HUGE CANCER, little god.  It isn’t BIG PROBLEM, little solution.  It’s always HUGE GOD, puny can-sir/addiction/debt/war/whatever!  Now that’s powerful.  And just what psychological stand-point do YOU think is healthier and more able to kick in the body’s own endorphins and interluken and other healing chemical reactions to facilitate total health and wellness…?

liam-and-dady1Anne Wigmore taught us that the body is a SELF-HEALING organism…all we need to do is ‘get out of our own way’ and stop interfering.  My hubba bub is really confronting all the ways he has been in his own way.  It’s incredible to watch him awakening to himself.  Like most of you, we have had crazy periods of stress and stuff; and we are truly experiencing a shift in our perceptions and realising so much how we have allowed life to feel overwhelming.  From having stayed home to be there for our kids we have made tremendous sacrifices.  We have never actually been able to afford it- but we did what we believe is priority.  The financial burden has been off the charts- which of course leads to emotional melt-downs and physical short-circuiting.  In short- STRESS!!!

What hubs and I are starting to see is that even in bills or debt or dis-ease or whatever, these are just facts of our life- there is no inherent stress from all that.  There just is no stress OUT THERE.  It is all our perception.  In fact, if we couldn’t think, there would be no stress even possible!  How’s that for a $50 insight!  We are making a new pact between us- if something feels stressful to us, we have a choice, either to change it if we can, or to change our perception about it.  Just by-pass stress altogether.  Now, I’m not saying we are just coasting along living in bliss without a care in the world…YET!  Hahaha!  Sure sounds like a plan! xoxoxox
