“You know, the cool thing about Edgrrr is that he’s always going to be our baby. He’s going to stay the same size. I love that!”

I watched Mo cuddling with our 13-pound toy poodle on the couch. Mo had her body curled around the dog and he had his chin nestled against her neck.

“Y’all are gross.”

“Mom, shut up. This is sweet and you know it.”

“Whatever.” I feigned disgust.

Chia Fun! Grow Your Own Yummy Fairy Garden

How awesome are chia seeds?

We love chia seeds at our house and now I’ve found a new way to enjoy their super powers as I explore and the world with my daughter as I grow on this mothering journey.

There are heaps of articles floating around on the net talking up the health benefits of consuming chia seeds as a food. Do some research and educate yourself if you haven’t already.

I came across a beautiful idea for growing a fairy garden from chia seeds, in a Steiner inspired homeschooling resource.  It totally inspired and excited me, and I hope it does the same for you…

Double the Fun: Tips for New Parents of Twins

June 21st, 2010 by Fiona

by Joanne

evie-bella-4-months

I nearly fell off the ultrasound bed when we discovered I was having twins.

We’d got to the 18-week mark without having an ultrasound (our obstetrician said it wasn’t necessary until then), so seeing two little heartbeats was quite a shock.

The next shock was finding that we were having twin girls. There had been 100 years of boys only in Darren’s family - five generations without a girl. Until the ultrasound, I hadn’t wanted to know the sex of our baby, but when we were told it would be two, I had to know whether they were boys or girls, or a combination!

We spent the next 18 weeks in shock, changing our single-baby plans to accommodate two.  How on Earth was I going to handle looking after two babies? I had had first-time-mother daydreams of spending hours gazing into the eyes of my beautiful baby (singular) - how was I going to share myself between two babies at once, giving them all that they needed? Besides the cost of tools and the avocado seed, which you would probably have thrown out any way, this is a free creative project that ignites inspiration.

I imagine this would be a great activity to share with teenage girls…

Do you feel EXTREME?: Utopian Ideals in a Modern World

June 14th, 2010 by Fiona

By Fiona Hollis

Since joining the raw food community I’ve dealt with feelings of ‘extremism’ and not quite fitting in. It starts with food and nutrition, then radiates into morality, philosophy and lifestyle.

Once on the other side of the fence, I labeled raw foodists ‘extreme’ in their living, driven by a cacao fueled aspiration to be 100% raw. My 80% felt inferior - never mind the lows of winter months. I’d learned so much about food, and managed to heal my body - but where did I fit in to this raw community? Read the rest of this entry »

Baby Carriers are becoming more and more trendy these days and they come in so many different styles it can make your head spin but at the end of the day the main thing every mom wants is a carrier that is both comfortable for themselves and safest for their baby.

While this is a personal preference I must say I have tried on so many carriers, slings, wraps, mei tei’s and more - that I think I may have found a winner.  The Bamboo Wrap is my absolute favorite and here’s why:

Making Allowances - What lessons do you teach your children about money?

June 7th, 2010 by Fiona

money

Maybe I’ve just read too many books from the Little House on the Prairie series, but I believe children should be expected to help with and be involved in running the home.

And I’m not just talking about having kids clean their rooms or put their dishes in the sink after a meal either. I’m talking about incorporating kids into every level of home maintenance - meal planning and preparation, house cleaning, yard work, finances…

Wait a minute. Did I just say finances?!? Uh-oh. I may be about to hit on a taboo here, but hear me out. Read the rest of this entry »

Raw Spinach Chips

June 4th, 2010 by Fiona

By Carissa

raw spinach chips

We went grocery shopping the other day and my husband bought 2 big bags of Sun Chips.  UGH! Yes, the one in the really loud compostable bag.  I couldn’t believe it and moreover, one  whole bag was finished the day after we brought them home.  Here I am a die-hard raw foodie and my husband’s choice  of food was junk.  But, I figured 2 things:

1. the bad - I wasn’t providing my husband’s taste buds with something he wanted

2. the good - I was motivated to find something healthy that he actually likes to eat.
