The Day Daniel Vitalis Came To My House

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 by Lisa

by Lisa Marie Lindenschmidt

molmI host a raw vegan potluck at my home each month. To shake things up a bit, I’ve been trying to schedule speakers to come and give talks on subjects that are a bit on the outskirts of the raw vegan community. As my first speaker, I thought it would be appropriate to invite Daniel Vitalis to come and speak about elixirs. It was fitting, of course, given that he often gets touted as “the bad boy of the raw food world.” Outskirts seems to be his forte.

We first got turned onto Daniel’s work in April when my daughter and I attended the Superhero Seminar in York, ME. Daniel was one of the featured speakers alongside David Wolfe and LivingStone. At the time, he was talking about spring water and I was convinced: OK, that’s logical. We need to get on spring water. But during the event, I was tooling around, checking out the booths. One of my friends came up to me and pointed to Daniel’s ElixirCraft course that was for sale, said, “totally worth it,” and then walked away. I stared at the CD – a course that explained how to make tinctures and cordials, among other things – and realized that I came here for this. Kind of one of those weird loopy moments where you think something that you already knew. So, I bought the course, listened to all of it… and began making our own homeopathic medicines. Within a month, Jim quit his asthma meds, I cleared out the medicine cabinet of all conventional medications, and we converted to homeopathy 100%.

Since then, we’ve found a local spring and have been drinking only spring water, have taken Daniel’s other course, Invincible Health Mastery, and have watched all his videos on YouTube. I’m making him sound like a guru, aren’t I? Either that or I’m one of his most fanatical followers. Well, he’s not and neither am I. But you have to really listen to what he’s saying and watch how he presents this information. He’s not saying anything we don’t already know (again… that weird loopy feeling): the reason we’ve forgotten our ancient wisdoms (and, yes, there are more than one) is because we’ve allowed ourselves to become domesticated, to become disempowered.

Which brings me back to the potluck. You have to know Daniel’s work on the four Elements (Air, Earth, Fire, Water) to appreciate Jim’s wanting to have him do his talk out in our Grove’s fire pit in the backyard. My husband is a Reiki Master and one of the most powerfully magickal men I know. He really resonated with Daniel’s concepts of the Elements and how each play into who we are and how we relate to the world. Jim intuited that Daniel would be into giving a talk by a fire out in the middle of the woods in the dark… and he was right.

I found that when you ask for a talk about elixirs from Daniel, you’re not going to just get some bits and bobs about how cool elixirs are. There’s a journey involved. He has to show you the starting point – which has absolutely nothing to do with elixirs – and the end point – which is really not the end of anything. All of us had gathered around the fire. Some of us sat perched on the beautiful benches Jim had made, some were squatting on the sides, and the smaller ones played in the dirt around the fire ring. After a brief introduction, Daniel, in Vibram Five Fingers, a kilt, and a Hobbit cloak, started talking.

What you immediately sense from Daniel is that while he’s talking, he’s listening. This was odd for me. I couldn’t quite figure it out at first, but then I started to see that he was listening to something deep within himself, listening to the forest around him, and listening to all the people feeding back at the fire. Everything was of equal value, everything was information that could be assimilated. What was happening here? I tried listening to what he was saying while employing “bigger listening” – to the energies around the fire, the environment around me – and got bombarded with too much information. Is this what Daniel keeps referring to as domestication? Was it possible that this type of tuning in was a common thing in the past? I don’t believe that Daniel has any special superhuman powers, but I do believe that he’s tuned in or more “awake.” I want that.

There has been a lot to unpack from his talk – things he said, things he didn’t say, things I felt – that I need to incorporate. It felt like he simply showed me that I had a key for a door I didn’t know existed. And I’m not so sure that I would have been able to appreciate his talk had I not done all my introspective work over the years. I don’t believe in gurus; I believe in people coming into your life because you’ve called them there to point you in the direction you intuitively know you need to go.

RAW SUPERMAN, DAVE KLEIN

Saturday, August 1st, 2009 by Lisa

DavidKleinDave knows about health! He was totally wiped-out as a teen, then went through a decade without giving up, to find his way back. What I love most about Dave, besides his heart-felt conviction and dedication to helping others, is his generous networking spirit. He was one of the first to publish my writing in his magazine, VIBRANCE, the world’s most-read raw food lifestyle magazine. He loves to share everything he knows, including introducing people so the community feels more connected. For example, Dave told Karen Ranzi about me years ago when she was first writing her book on CREATING HEALTHY CHILDREN, and so Karen asked me to write a chapter. Now Karen is contributing to rawmom, thanks Dave! Dave is now Dr. Dave with a Phd as a Hygienic Doctor and a certified Nutrition Educator in health. His book, which I found in my public library and loaned to a friend who was suffering from Crohn’s disease, is called SELF HEALING COLITIS & CROHN’S. Leading people to health independence is David’s passion.

Here is Dave’s inspiring story:

My journey into the health education field began in 1975, when at age 17 my robust health began to gradually decline. A heavy eater of meat and junk food, my physical and mental energies deteriorated over a period of six months, then I experienced incessant diarrhea. After a few weeks of medical treatment, I showed little improvement, so a colon examination was done. The diagnosis was ulcerative colitis, and I spent my 18th birthday in a hospital, taking prednisone and azulfadine drug treatments. What ensued were eight tortuous years of colitis flare-ups and off-and-on drug therapy. At age 26, I was reduced to a weak, sickly shadow of my former self.

I desperately wanted my health back, but doubted that the doctors knew what they were doing.
My gastroenterologist recommended that I either try his experimental drug which knocks out the immune system, or have my colon surgically removed. Upon hearing this, a heavy decisive thought entered my mind: I have had it with this medical madness - I’ll be dead soon if I don’t find the answer myself! Over the next few days I started thinking like never before about how to overcome my illness. I realized that I had to figure out what the MD’s could not.

Then one amazing night while studying T. C. Fry’s Life Science/Natural Hygiene course, I beheld a healing vision and it all made sense; the picture of my new health was revealed via this pathway to self-mastery. I was ecstatic knowing I had set myself free!

DavidKleinBookCoverThe next day I threw away the medicines, divorced myself from all medical intervention for good, gave up all meat and dairy forever and started a 3-day juice cleanse. By the second day I was coming back to life. On the third day I was feeling better and better and my enthusiasm and joy drove my family and friends crazy! My gut was feeling soothed and I was rejuvenating. I set myself free of illness, doctors and medicines for good, and my bowels were working better and better!!

Over the next few years I diligently worked at rebuilding my depleted body, incorporating daily running and yoga, all the while studying the life sciences and all of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual factors which determine our health. It took several years of total dedication to build robust health. Today, at age 50, I enjoy excellent health and feel strong and energetic!

DAVE, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 10 BASICS ABOUT MAINTAINING HEALTH THAT ALL MOMS NEED TO KNOW:

  1. Cooking food is an act of destruction and creates toxins.
  2. Alive raw fruits, succulent plants, seeds and nuts are the foods which constitute our natural, most delicious and most healthful diet; “Live Foods For Live People”.
  3. Every nutrient we need is available in fruit and plant foods; there is no need to kill and eat dead animals.
  4. A meal of an apple is immeasurably nutritionally superior to any cooked food meal. Simple eating is not boring–it is deliciously liberating and reverses aging!
  5. Our bodies know how to self heal disease–we merely have to step out of the way, live on simple raw juices, and/or fruits and vegetables, or on water, get rest and sleep and the body will detoxify and heal.
  6. We cannot become healthy if we attempt to drug and continue to pollute our bodies with medicines and dead “foods.”
  7. There are no quick fixes or short cuts to health–only the body itself can regenerate a healthier body, and it needs a clean diet and supportive conditions to do that.
  8. There are no mysteries behind why we get sick–the information describing the cause of and way to overcome every illness, and the proper professional help, is here and available to everyone.
  9. No one need fear “getting sick”. “Getting sick” is nature’s way of detoxifying and telling us that we need to correct our thinking and live more healthfully. Disease is not inevitable or out of our control–we only become diseased if we poison and enervate our bodies and minds
  10. Perfect health and joyous living are our birthright, and we can all move toward their realization every day, on the glorious healthful living path.

I thank you for posting this Shannon, and for all you do to help spread the message of healthful living. I’d love to share with you now a favourite recipe of mine, and wish you and all your RAW MOMS beautiful health and abundance!

SimplyRaw with Natasha Kyssa

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 by Lisa

Natasha-300x452I had the unexpected pleasure of running into Natasha at my local Health food Store this summer while my boys and I were popping in to do a little shopping. I had met Natasha on Facebook, and knew she was on a book tour. It was a great meeting! She gave me a copy of her book and I devoured it. It is full of simple, straight forward and up to the minute, yet, timeless nutritional advice on a proper detox. I am inspired again to make rejuvelac- but now instead of making it with wheat berries, I am using her cabbage recipe:

  • 3 ½ C purified water
  • 6 C coarsely chopped organic cabbage

Blend until liquefied. Strain out the small amount of pulp through a Nut mylk bag.
Pour liquid into a sterile mason jar right to the top and cover tightly with a lid so no air gets in. Leave for 3 days to ferment. I use about 2 cups in my children’s green smoothie and they don’t even notice! This is FULL of healthy enzymes and lactobacteria. The rest I refrigerate until the next day and use in smoothies again. It can be drank on its own too, though I can’t imagine by too many kids!

Natasha shares about superfoods, colonics, socializing, skin care, and has oodles of wonderful recipes too!

Here’s a new favourite of mine from her book:

CREAMY CAULIFLOWER SOUP

  • 2 C Almond mylk
  • 1 med Cauliflower chopped
  • 1 Red Pepper seeded and chopped
  • ½ Avocado
  • juice of 1 Lemon
  • 2 T raw Tahini
  • 2 T unpasteurised Miso (I use a mellow one)
  • ½ Jalapeno pepper seeded and diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic

BLEND UNTIL CREAMY.

Here is a recipe my boys are enjoying that your children can try:

CRÈME BUCKWHEAT

  • 1C sprouted Buckwheat (even soaking for ½ day and draining and rinsing overnight works to soften, but waiting until it sprouts a tail is the best)
  • ½ C purified Water
  • 1 Banana
  • ¼ C soaked Raisins
  • pinch of Cinnamon

PROCESS until smooth. I add chopped apples on top.

Now, a little bit more about her book:

The SimplyRaw Detox Manual

by Natasha Kyssa

DetoxManual-300x450The modern world is a toxic place, and we’ve all become less healthy because of it, whether it is from the air that we breathe or the foods that we eat. Natasha Kyssa is a raw foods chef and lifestyle coach, and her company SimplyRaw helps people improve their health and wellbeing by integrating simple, natural-based guidelines into their current lifestyles. This informative and useful manual outlines Natasha’s twenty-eight-day detox program, which includes only raw and “living” foods (i.e., those that have been soaked, sprouted, or fermented). It is a gentle, effective method to cleanse the body of toxins and to provide optimal nourishment for healing. The author believes that we can heal ourselves naturally to mend the damage done to our bodies due to unhealthy environments and improper food choices.

Raw diets have become all the rage lately, but Natasha believes that proper digestion, essential for one’s health and vitality, can be greatly improved by a living foods diet. This manual, which includes 135 recipes as well as plenty of guidelines and background information, follows a proven approach to better health, natural weight loss, increased vitality, and healthy lifestyle changes.
Natasha Kyssa is a former international fashion model who has been a raw and living foods vegan for almost twenty years. At the age of forty-seven, she leads an active lifestyle and trains daily, including rock climbing, long-distance running, hiking, skiing, yoga, Pilates, and cycling. She attributes her strength, well-being, and youthfulness to her raw and living foods diet. She lives in Ottawa.

Why and when did you choose the raw food lifestyle?

I became interested in raw food approximately seventeen years ago while struggling with a very
debilitating eating disorder – specifically, anorexia and bulimia. Adopting the raw lifestyle not only
changed my approach to foods but completely transformed my life!

What are living foods?

Living foods are easy-to-digest foods that contain great amounts of enzymes and vital nutrients through
the process of soaking, sprouting and fermenting (for example, sprouts, soaked nuts and seeds, and
sauerkraut).

Your book is about detoxing. Why should we detox?

We are living in an extremely polluted world, and our health is threatened by the many chemicals in our air, food, and water. These toxins accumulate and can overload the body, causing various symptoms including fatigue, a weakened immune system, infection, weight gain, and vulnerability to illness and disease.

A detox program is an excellent opportunity to help the body remove some of the toxicity and reduce stress on the digestive system. It is the first step to bringing your body back to optimal health. When the
body is cleansed, it becomes more efficient with digestion and elimination. As a result, symptoms of illness often disappear and the body becomes balanced.

Is there a wrong way to detox?

Detoxifying in a harsh way, such as fasting or taking harsh products, can be harmful to the body – if not done properly. One must always make sure to return nutrients to the body so that it will not become depleted. There are a lot of detox products out on the market, but many of them are too abrasive and aggressive for the average person.

How does the SimplyRaw detox differ from other detox programs?

The SimplyRaw Detox Program is unique in that it focuses on nourishing plant foods and life-enhancing practices to incorporate into one’s daily life. Rather than popping a superficial “detox” pill or going on a restrictive fast, one instead learns to cultivate the necessary dietary and lifestyle
changes that help the body’s natural cleansing process. These high-quality living foods also help nourish and rebuild the body.

What is your favourite raw recipe?

I love all green juices and green smoothies. They not only nourish your body with alkaline minerals,
they’re quick, delicious and make you feel good. Smoothies are the perfect fast food!

Here is our family favourite smoothie:

SWEET MANGO SMOOTHIE

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 mangos
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup sprouts

Blend and enjoy!

Raw Mom Summit - After Thoughts

Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Lisa

Hey there! I MISSED YOU! I feel like I have been gone for sooooooo long! I started preparations for the RAW MOM SUMMIT 4 months ago, and have been such a busy bee all this time. It was such a whirlwind of wonder and expansion for me.

Shannon LeoneMy whole family had to work with me and my new schedule to assist me and so it was really a learning curve for us all. There were missed bedtimes and school drop-offs and pick-ups (we walk through the forest to school and I wasn’t able to for much of those months) so some independence was gained! And there were some really strange dinners a few too many nights- thankfully I find it easy to keep to my GREEN SMOOTHIES daily for the family, and on weekends a green juice, plus a salad every day!

But GONE were the lovely almond milks, the raw desserts or gourmet meals…I haven’t seen my Tae Kwon Do Dojang either, and my legs have felt so stiff and unhappy sitting on this chair for up to 12 hours without a break day after week after month.

WOW! Working Moms are INCREDIBLE! Its been so eye opening for me to not just get that intellectually, but to live it.

The support I felt from Tera always carried me through! Not to mention hearing the stories and insights of people I have read and admired for decades- like Dr. BERNIE SEIGEL…I hope you got to hear his call! I listend to it over and over again…He has dealt with life and death with such humour, wisdom and sovereignty and showed the medical community a more human face of cancer. I have always loved him.

The Continuum ConceptAnd Jean Liedloff. Her book THE CONTINUUM CONCEPT was one of my first parenting books I ever read- I actually read it when I was about 20 long before my babies…I had always wanted to hear and read about mothering with wisdom, and this book is a classic. And Jean was such a generous guest to interview. In my excitement I interrupted her with questions and personal anecdotes, and she was so gracious about it all! Her information is SO PRACTICAL, and that is exactly what we moms so badly need!

And BYRON KATIE- How she took me and everyone through that process over the potential death of our children…it was so powerful! I am STILL learning to incorporate her profound words of wisdom IN…It has already made an impact on my anxiety level around my children’s safety and well-being.

Kate MagicI could go on and on- Victoria Boutenko and Vayla blew me away with their wisdom.
So did the kind and masterful Dr. Gabriel Cousens, David Wolfe, Shazzie. And Kate Magic inspired me like crazy- I have started to hand over more than 50% of the food prep to my sons because of her! And I was also inspired by Karen Ranzi’s dedication to her children!

Didn’t you just love SHANTREE? His passion for permaculture and the Earth is so inspiring and moving! And his partner Lorenna- what she shared about sacred relationships and ‘BLISSAPLINES’ was some of the best ideas I have heard anywhere.

Dr. Carolyn Dean and Wayne Gendel always fulfill my insatiable desire to KNOW the FACTS! Their calls were jam-packed with solid content. And so was BRIGETTE MARS’ call! What a treasure trove of fantastic information and ideas she is.

Susun WeedMy call with SUSUN WEED was perhaps most controversial as Susun is known for her anti-raw ideas- but people misinterpret that I think. She really just doesn’t advocate any diet over any other as she embraces everything in the tradition of the WISE WOMAN WAY. And she doesn’t believe we are ‘toxic’ and need to constantly ‘cleanse’ and purify- she believes we are already perfect and whole. I honestly feel that is wisdom, because we need to NOURISH ourselves as she says, and we tend to over-indulge and then cleanse which can be so depleting. There is so much to be gained by embracing different perspectives, and just taking what works for you at any given point on your journey.

ALL OF THE GUESTS SPEAKERS did us a beautiful service. The message over and over again was to relax, go at your own pace, do what feels intrinsically right for YOU and your family. Raw foods feels optimal in terms of nourishment for me, but so does herbal infusions. It isn’t about judging ourself or our diet or anyone else’s. It isn’t about making our homes and dinner tables filled with tension and strive. Just the opposite.

The living foods lifestyle is a path of harmony and flow. Of nourishment and grace. Of love and goodness. And it is just a choice, another beautiful choice we GET to make.

I learned so much from the RAW MOM SUMMIT. I feel transformed. Softened. Calmer. More grounded in my own wisdom.

I truly hope you all received some beautiful life-long pearls too.

Blissings,

Shakaya

Getting Candid With Mama Diva: Veronika Robinson

Monday, May 18th, 2009 by Jamie Abrams

Robinsonfamilymay16th2009GlassonbyI have been familiar with Veronika Robinson’s motherly handiwork for quite some time.  She is a vivacious wife to Paul and mama to Bethany (13) and Eliza (11), based in Cumbria, UK.  However, her integrity and loving commitment to raising children surpasses any of her other worldly achievements. Veronika has even been labelled as an “Extraordinary Breastfeeder” in the UK.  She is author of several books including The Drinks Are On Me : Everything your mother never told you about breastfeeding, which is a superb read. But I think Veronika is most popular for her international-selling magazine The Mother, the ethos of which is one of supporting a holistic attachment parenting style (fertility awareness, conscious conception, peaceful pregnancy, ecstatic birthing, natural immunity and more!). Without further adieux I introduce you to Veronika Robinson ~ Über Mama.

Veronika, briefly how did you come to embrace your Earth-loving lifestyle?

As a toddler, I could be found playing among the plants in our garden. We lived at the edge of a city in the suburbs, and my older siblings would take me to a place called Dead Horse creek (awful name, beautiful place), and we’d spend hours jumping from the trees into the pond. Our garden had a large passion fruit vine and I would literally spend hours sitting there, breaking each fruit open with my teeth, and sucking the seeds out.

At six, my parents moved us to a 700 hundred acre property (on the Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia), and my love affair with Mother Earth became my life. I was always up trees, riding horses high into the  mountains and camping overnight, swimming in creeks, picking fruits and herbs from our huge garden, sucking the end of honeysuckle flowers. My mother’s love of the Earth was pivotal in shaping me. She spent every day outside ~ easy to do in sunny Australia! ~ nurturing our garden. She fed us foods she’d grown, tended any ailments naturally, and never took us to doctors.

Becoming a parent meant drawing upon a lifetime of Earth wisdom passed to me from my mother. I’m always learning, and have so much more I’d like to learn, but on a day to day basis, being able to get outside and just ‘be’ with my plants, soil and the visiting wildlife is sustenance to my soul.

In your book you mention that you eat a plant-based diet, but don’t say whether your two beautiful girls and hunky hub go along the same approach. Can you elaborate on this? How long have you nourished yourself / family in this manner? How easy/difficult have you found it?

Yes, they do. Just before I met my husband, I’d drawn up a long list of what Mr Right would be like, and near the top of the list was ‘vegetarian’. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I discovered he didn’t eat animals. Over the years I’ve alternated between being vegan and having the odd egg or cheese, and although I was vegan for my pregnancy with Bethany, the second the sperm and egg collided at Eliza’s conception, I couldn’t eat enough eggs and cheese.

We’re all vegan. There’s no difficulty in eating this way at home, but when we go travelling it requires a lot of forethought, in either looking for places online before we leave or taking plenty of our own food. We love to make food in this house, and eating out is increasingly becoming a disappointment.

Nutritional supplements tend to be in hot debate in the health field. Which do you and your family use – if any?

No doubt it’s hotly debated because it raises the issue of the awfully unnatural lives we lead, and beggars the question: why don’t you attend to the root, rather than the symptom?

We start our day (breakfast) with a smoothie made from E3 Renew Me. It’s ridiculously expensive, and I always breathe deeply when I buy it, but it’s both a short and long term investment in my family’s health. I’m constantly disappointed by the quality of fruit and veg in this country. We’ve a great organic fruit and vegetable farmers’ market in our local town, but even there I find myself not buying things because I doubt they’ll ripen fully. When you’ve been raised in the sub-tropics and actually know what ripe fruit tastes like, it’s instinctual to decline certain fruits in the UK. I don’t know why, but I’m still shocked that the English can think a rock hard green mango is ripe! No, a ripe mango is yellow/orange, can be smelt from several paces away, and is so lush and juicy that the only place you can eat it is naked in the bathtub. Anything that doesn’t involve such measures is not ripe. Unfortunately, mangoes are my favourite food in the world ~ and a pleasure I rarely have.

Who inspired your plant-based diet?
Veronika_sm

I chose to become vegetarian when I was five. One morning I woke up and declared that I was no longer going to eat animals.
Although we had cooked food growing up, my mum squeezed us a fresh orange juice every morning, and we always came home from school to a large plate of salad.

Who do you especially admire in the gastronomic realm?

Sadly, very few, including the raw food world, as some of them really don’t walk the talk. They tell their admiring public one thing, and live lives that are at odds with that information. I do, however, feel that Gabriel Cousins (author of Conscious Eating) is authentic and always enjoy his writings.

What does your family eat on a typical day?

There’s no typical day, and it depends on the day of week. The further away it is from Tuesday (fruit and veg market day) the fewer greens there are, for example, though I plan to have plenty in the garden from June to October. I really dislike buying fruit and veg from a supermarket, even the organic ones ~ laden in plastic.

This morning we started the day with blueberries and strawberries, and had our breakfast smoothie (algae) for morning tea instead. At lunch the family had a plate of various dark leafy greens, grated carrot, yellow pepper, tomato, cucumber, grated broccoli and alfalfa sprouts. I had a juice with greens, ginger, carrot, apple and pear.

I’ve got my eye on a lovely ripe avocado, which I’ll include in tonight’s salad, and we’ll have grilled aubergine to accompany it.

No pun intended, but how do you nurse your spirit and keep motivated? What spiritual disciplines do you practice – if any?

There’s no typical day, and like life, disciplines and practices change.
I start the day with about half an hour’s quiet, contemplative time. This morning I wrote Morning Pages (3 foolscap pages based on the Artist’s Way to unleash one’s creativity), I went for a brisk one hour walk with the family, did 70 minutes of Yin yoga, and had a vegetable juice for lunch to give my digestive tract a bit of space. During the rest of the day, I’ve got to find the time and space to do a full-time job (editing The Mother magazine ~ answering emails is a full-time job in itself!), there are home educated children to nurture, a husband to smile at from time to time, and I’d like to visit a friend up the road. She has two toddlers and I know how very long the day can seem when you’re ‘home alone’ with children. In the evening, I will most definitely read a book to keep me inspired, such as Romancing the Ordinary.

My family and I have fortnightly chiropractic. This is to keep the nervous system open and responsive.

Music is one of the greatest foods for my soul, as well as solitude.

I love to learn more about others and myself through the Enneagram and psychological astrology. It’s made an extraordinary difference to how I see others. Rather than putting people into a box, it allows us to step out of the boxes we create for ourselves: in short, to take responsibility for how we act.
As a child, I practised yoga with my mother, and again when I was pregnant. It’s a recent addition to my life, and I regret not having kept it up after my pregnancy. I was ‘forced’ into yoga because my body increasingly ‘yelled’ at me to do something to compensate for all the computer hours I’m required to do for my job. Day after day I’d come to the computer chair and my body said ‘no’. I’ve ignored this for so long, and ended up in excruciating pain for most of the past seven years.

The beautiful side-effect of yoga is that although the benefits to my back are immeasurable, it’s also brought a deep calmness to me and in the way I see things. Every mother deserves this in her life, especially when her children are young.

How would you best describe your life philosophy?

Live simply, so that others may simply live.

Veronika, you whole-heartedly embody attachment parenting. What are your thoughts on the disconnected parenting that has become so prevalent in our Western society?Tm_34

It breaks my heart. Every time I go to town and hear a baby crying, or see a toddler being slapped or bullied by a parent, I die inside. The vast majority of people have no concept that the way we parent our children is the foundation of the society we live in. If you don’t have the time to love, cherish, nurture and meet the biological needs of your children, then you should leave population growth to someone else. It may sound black and white, but the bottom line is: disconnected parenting is EVERYONE’S problem. We all pay the price for such abuse and neglect.

The trouble is, in such an emotionally backward country like Britain, you can leave your baby in a pram or car seat all day with a dummy in the mouth, and topped up with formula milk and no one says a word. Put the focus on a woman who naturally nurtures her child with full-term breastfeeding, and the whole country cries ‘paedophile!!’ How we begin to put back the pieces to creating whole, happy human beings happens one baby at a time, one mother at a time. It’s like starting to build humanity all over again ~ dismantling prejudices and ignorance.

What are your feelings / thoughts on dummy/pacifier use?

Agggh. Do I really have to answer that? They’re called dummies for a reason. They ‘dummify’ us. It’s not just the baby who has to ‘shut up’ (AND CLOSE DOWN) ~ it’s also the mother.

There’s an amazing circuit of energy that disintegrates between mother and child when we start using artificial substitutes.

Dummies take 750 years to decompose. If a mother isn’t moved by the impact of that on this Earth, she’s pretty unlikely to be connected to her baby either. Cultures which hold the mother and child bond as sacred, also hold the Earth as sacred.

Sometimes even breastfeeding mothers will say that their child needed a dummy because s/he wanted to ‘suck all day’. Yeah, that’s what little babies do! I find that the more connected a mother is to her baby (i.e. emotionally and physically present), the less likely babe will want to suckle all the time (unless the baby is teething, in which case they’ll seek out this natural analgaesic). Babies have their own ways of seeking attachment, and learning to surrender to the art of conscious mothering makes the job a whole lot easier.

How would you best describe the link between breastfeeding and sexuality?Drinks_front

Cor, the last time I attempted to answer something like this I was shot down in flames. People don’t want to hear that breastfeeding is linked to sexuality, because they think it means ‘sex’ and that you want to have sex with your baby/child or partner.

We are sexual beings, from top to toe. There’s no denying it, though most people sabotage, abuse or denigrate it in all sorts of ways. We have a ‘creative energy’ into something with evil, deadly or dangerous dimensions.
Breastfeeding is designed to be pleasurable ~ for mum and baby. That it’s not for so many women is a good indication of how warped we are, culturally, when it comes to body pleasure.

Michel Odent’s book The Functions of Orgasms is vital reading. He thoroughly explains the ‘orgasm’ of breastfeeding ~ the beautiful, biological ability to experience climactic transcendence due to the hormonal surges of breastfeeding. These words, powerful and true as they are, are unlikely to fall on listening ears for many years.

What words of wisdom you would share with moms who are going raw and raising families in the area of breastfeeding and attachment parenting?

Always listen to your own instincts. They’re there, they’re powerful, and they’ll always guide you if you get your ego out of the way, and blank out our culture’s messages.

In terms of how much raw food you bring into your life, remember it’s not a religion and it’s certainly not a competition. Some of the biggest names in the raw food world are not ‘all raw’ behind the scenes, either in their own diet or what they feed their children, so don’t use them as your yard stick.
Always make your decisions on what feels right for you and your family, and never because of what someone else might think.

We’re all human, and there are times when our hunger goes way beyond food and into old, old emotional wounds. These are the times we seek out less than nourishing products and habits. Nurture yourself lovingly through these times. This can be especially true as a parent, because our children bring up all our childhood wounds for healing.

Beware of gurus, especially those within the attachment parenting field, e.g. proponents of Aware Parenting, who espouse controlled crying but within a mother’s arms. This is biologically wrong and very harmful to the baby.

Any recipes or food tips you can share with us?

I love salads, and shy away from raw foods that are sitting in dehydrators for days on end ~ which have me drinking water for Britain ~ or require industrial strength food processors. I love leafy green salads, and like to play with them by adding something unexpected, like strawberries or borage flowers. Often when we have visitors, even if there’s cooked food on offer, they’ll always comment on the salads, probably because most people think of iceberg and cucumber.

We had a potluck last night at a friend’s house, and the salad contained lots of rocket, baby pak choi, red bartlett pear, strawberry, and sunflower seeds.
I love variety and different textures, such as thinly sliced cucumber, lemon juice, fresh spearmint leaves and a sprinkle of sesame seeds or grated carrot, sultanas, sprouted chickpeas, and a dash of pineapple juice.

Lastly, what new projects are in the pipeline that you would like to share with us?

I’m working on a few books at the moment. One is our home educating journey as a family, particularly the aspect of autonomy and freedom in learning. Another book is on natural weaning (child-led weaning and biological expectations) and the third is on the spirituality of breastfeeding. There are some other books I’m plodding along on, such as holistic menstruation, natural remedies and living with the continuum-concept in the modern world. Now, where was that 48 hour day?

Veronika, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to get candid on topics that are so important to us as mothers.

Water…More profound than even RAW FOOD!

WATER- MORE PROFOUND EVEN THAN OUR RAW FOOD!

Daniel Vitalis is a raw foodist, Martial Artist/warrior who has a sacred and evolved understanding and relationship with water and shares with us some of his amazing insights.  I especially love the way he talks about our basic desire as moms to foster excellence in our children!  And also how he gives primal insight into what would actually motivate a man to change his dietary ways.  ONLY another man could really know…!  Thanks Daniel!  Also, he is NOT on the ‘vegan bandwagon’ and asks Moms to stay in our feminine wisdom and reclaim our sovereign right to learn and do what our ancestors have done as far as preparing for Birth, or feeding our children.  I appreciate Daniel’s appreciation of women, Nature and the basic intelligence of children who are raised with Nature…everything he said makes perfect sense and is extraordinary in his distinctions.  My children have enjoyed his fascinating youtube videos where he vortexes water into mini tornados.  I actually purchased a 2 inch cuplar from the hardware store to do my own water too, but have so far been unable to locate where to purchase 4L GLASS water bottles.  My husband is very interested in locating for us a Natural spring where we can gather our own water, and I know this will happen soon.  I encourage all moms to read this interview and begin thinking about WATER at least as much as we do about our children’s FOOD…

danielchefDaniel, I find your work to be enthralling and profound.  Also, your style of delivery is wonderfully clear, understandable and inspiring.  Can you give a brief background so our readers here at rawmom get a sense about you if they are not already familiar with your work.

Yes, and Thank You!

I have had the unique experience of having become involved with this level of nutritional awareness at a fairly young age, half my life ago, when I was 15 years old.  I spent many years exploring every aspect of nutrition that I could uncover, and experimented on myself  (with what now feels like reckless abandon!) for many years before I began to bring my personal philosophies to the forefront as a teacher.

Much of my work in this area was influenced by the chefs and teachers I met in my travels, and more than anything it has been nature that has informed my worldview.  Primarily it was the revelation that the “Elements” of Earth, Water, Air, and Fire are not just poetic and arcane principles of our ancestors, but very real and living energies that permeate our experience of reality.  My work in the raw community as a teacher began with my bringing awareness to a more complete and whole relationship to the Element of Water, and how we can, by interacting with it in a more sacred and alchemical way, increase our experience of vibrant living and environmental integration.

Being a rawfoodist makes it obvious after a while that the ‘food’ part of raw foodist is only the beginning and once the awareness kicks-in, it opens up passions and insights into seemingly unending pathways.

The chemical pollution affecting our land, air and water not to mention food chain, the mass extinction of species happening rapidly on the planet today, the climate crisis, corporate greed and psychotic-ness, the breakdown of every system from the family, marriages, education, personal responsibility, true health care, being in-tune with the Earth and its wisdom, the rape of Mother Nature, ALL this and more seems to be a SYMPTOM of a CRISIS OF CONSCIOUSNESS.  And as we know could be positively impacted by going raw…You have become the VOICE FOR WATER in our community.  Please tell us why WATER is your mission.

We interact, by accident or intention, with each of the Elements every day.  This is by design.  To me food, and particularly the kind of food we are talking about, is one way that we interact with the Element of Earth.  This is how we feed ourselves.  The quality of our food determines the quality of our relationship to Earth, or to the Earth.

Similarly, each day we interact with Water, and this is how we hydrate ourselves, or replace our solvent.  We are solvent based organisms (we are a liquid based design).

Just in the same way that our relationship to food reflects our relationship to the Earth, our daily Water intake determines to how we relate to Water in general.  Not just to the Water we drink, but also to the Water that covers 2/3rds of the globe.

This is significant when we look at the current water crisis facing our population.  It is really a reflection of our own personal water crisis.

You are wise to note that food is just the beginning.  We are waking up to the reality that we have been very much industrialized and domesticated. Our water comes from a tap or bottle, much in the way our cats and dogs get their water from a dish or tray.

This is really an issue of personal sovereignty, and a matter of waking up to our true power, right, and majesty as living beings and children of this eco-sphere.

Reclaiming our water is reclaiming our consciousness.  It is about recognizing where the source is.  In French the word for spring is “source”.  Our “Crisis Of Consciousness” as you called it stems from our own personal disconnection from the Source.  Reclamation of that connection is reclamation of personal power, dignity, and right to exist free and Sovereign!

Your blood is made directly from the water you drink.  When you drink doled out domesticated and chemically treated water, this is what your blood is made from.  This is what you are. When you drink well structured, healthy, living water from the source, this becomes your blood, the blood of the earth.  You become an ambassador of water.  You speak from the Source.

What do you want moms who are going raw raising their families to know about water.

More than anything else, I think Moms want to know how to create and foster the excellence that is inherent in their children.  Unfortunately this is not the prerogative of those who create legislature determining our municipal “Water Treatment”.  Much of the water coming from our taps, bottled beverages, restaurant foods and drinks, and now even bottled waters contain Sodium Fluoride.  This is not, as may of us were led to believe, good for our teeth, and in fact is very damaging.  Many experts have determined that Sodium Fluoride can reduce the IQ of a child by up to 20%! Lets put this in perspective.  If your child had an IQ of 100, exposure to tap water could reduce your child’s IQ to 80!

Also, in addition to the Fluoration of teeth and bones (which shows up as discolored patches on teeth, which you all have seen), Fluoride also targets the pineal gland, and more than any other tissue in the body!  Yes, this gland which is responsible for the production of melatonin, serotonin and a other important neurotransmitters, is the same organ that the Yogis refer to as the “Third Eye”.  The pineal gland literally becomes encrusted with Sodium Fluoride, hardening it and reducing its function.

And that is just the Fluoride, I will spare you the equally stunning information on Chlorine.

Many people have switched over to bottled water, which also presents a host of issues that could and probably should be addressed.  Most notably (assuming that the bottled water is really “spring” water and not just filtered tap water, which it often is) is the bottle itself.

Plastics as a whole tend to exhibit endocrine system disrupting molecular arrangements that we have come to call “zeno-estrogen’s”.  These estrogen mimics are coming more and more into the public awareness, though the media has done its job to downplay the seriousness of the effects.

You see, water is also known as the universal solvent.  This is because water has such strong solvent capabilities.  In other words, it dissolves things.  We use this to our advantage when we make a tea, dissolving the herbs we are using into the water.  The same thing happens with plastics, dissolving these zeno-estrogen plastic molecules into the water within the bottle, resulting in a “plastic tea”.  This is why you can taste plastic in the plastic bottled water.

This is leading to an epidemic in our environment and in our own bodies that has been deemed “estrogen pollution”, an endocrine system issue in nature that has lead to the loss of secondary male sex characteristics, female endocrine cancers (breast, uterine, ovarian, fibroid tumor, etc) as well as many of the associated emotional states that we have lumped under “Pre Menstrual Syndrome”, a fancy way of describing the psychological and emotive states that correspond to hormonal imbalance for woman.

Men are being equally effected, with sperm counts at an all time low, male bodies that are thin and feminine or big bellied with breast tissue.  It also effects the prostate and testicular tissues, leading to increases in cancers of these organs as well.

These are not easy topics to address, as they are not “politically correct” to discuss openly.  I think that we can all look around and see the obvious though, no matter how much our pop culture would like to remain in denial.

This is all rooted in our misuse, and misunderstanding of water, of our relationship to that water, and our embededness within a global if not galactic matrix of interconnected water molecules.  This may sound strange as we have not really been taught to see it this way, however this is in fact the obvious conclusion for anyone who has studied the science of water, and especially those who have been bold enough to couple this thinking with the more right brained understanding of water that was held by our ancestors.

My personal practice, which has eliminated my concerns about the health and safety of the water I drink, as well as reconnecting me to the sacred and ancient connection to the Water of the Earth, has been to gather my own Water from springs.

I have recently launched a project called www.findaspring.com which is dedicated to mapping springs all over North America.  It is a vision that I hold strongly to see all of those who are interested in this idea to be able to easily locate a spring in their area.  Please take a second to visit the site, which is still in its early stages, to find a spring near you, and to contribute a spring to the database if you know of one.

Dr Masuro Emoto did some ground-breaking work in Japan and wrote about it in MESSAGES IN WATER and his other books.  His message became popular through the movie WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW. Have you thought of being in touch with Dr Masuro to collaborate on a project together?

I feel a deep gratitude for the work he has done, and the influence it has had on me and so many others.  At this point we are both ambassadors of Water, and are sharing our message in different though complimentary arenas.  Perhaps there will come a day where the overlap brings he and I together.  This would be magick.

What can the average person who is living in a city in an apartment building or sub-division do to ensure the safety of their water that won’t seem to extreme as first steps (which could eventually lead to much bolder steps later on)?

elixircraftblog2Before I answer this, allow me a moment to set the stage.  You see, it is easy for us to get into a mindset that says “I am what I eat”.  There is truth in this, though it is minimal in relation to the statement “I am what I drink”.  Why?  Well we are optimally around 65-75% Water.  The “what we eat” part is relatively small in relationship to the “what we drink” part.  We are far less like a car, which is a solid object that runs on “fuel”, and much more like a fish tank, which is a Water based ecology.  We are very far behind, especially in our Western world, with regard to how we see our selves.

We are like an aquarium, an ecosystem that depends largely on Water.  Yes food is required, much like the food or “fish flakes” are required in an aquarium, though far more important to the health of the aquatic ecosystem is the health and quality of the Water.  Even the best food is useless if the fish are suspended in poor quality Water.

These “fish” are your cells and the microorganisms that dwell all over you (4 times more of them than you have cells!).  They thrive in high quality, well structured Water.

So, the first step would be to take an honest assessment.  To ask some real questions and be ready to honestly answer them.  Questions like “why am I putting so much time into what I eat, and not into what I am using as the basic solvent, or liquid that I run my “fish tank” on.

What is your Personal Water Strategy?  Is it to filter?  To buy bottled Water?

If you are filtering with a Carbon Block system, like a Pur or Britta filter it may be time time to get real with yourself.  Does this filter really remove Chlorine, or just the taste of Chlorine.  What about Fluoride?

Perhaps you are using something more serious like a Reverse Osmosis filter or a Distiller.  Ask yourself “does this Water really hydrate me, or does it taste lifeless and/or burned?

“Is there really a plastic counter top filtration unit that I can buy that can recreate what the Earths hydrological cycle is designed to do?”  ”Just what do I believe about human technology and its ability to replicate the functions of a living Earth?”

If you are choosing at this time to avoid accessing Water that you can source from within the Earth it may be time to look at why.  It may also be time to have a look at ideas around “Water restructuring” and using some kind of vortex, whether you make it yourself (see my youtube videos for more on this) or you purchase a commercial unit that does this for you (like the Vitalizer Plus).  Ultimately I feel that there is little in this world as gratifying as sourcing real, living spring Water.

If you have been using bottled Water it may be time to consider and research the effects of plastic on yourself and your children.  And due to the holographic and self similar patterning of reality, how the effects on us are similarly affecting the environment itself.  Bottled Water hurts us and hurts the Earth.  This option is less and less attractive to people everywhere.

There are a few exceptions, and while I am very much a proponent of Water gathered from springs, I have seen many great waters bottled in glass.  This can be a more sustainable and viable option for many people, especially those in the urban centers.

It does not ultimately solve the issues at hand, though it is a great movement towards better choices.  www.mountainvalleyspring.com is a great resource, and they deliver 5 gallon glass bottles of fresh spring Water to much of the country.  Check them out!  Find something similar!

What is most exciting is that any shift towards a better strategy will be accompanied by an increased sense of vitality and conscious awareness!

On a more personal note, talk to me about SLEEP- how much do you get, when, and how (mattress, floor, indoors or out, etc).

One of the things that I hear from so many people who choose to walk this road is “Since I began eating this way I only sleep 4 hours a night!”…

I have never really had that experience, except when fasting.  I enjoy sleeping, and feel that we would be best served by doing lots of it.  We are a stimulant loving culture, whether on a conventional diet or alternative, and most of us use artificial lighting after the sun goes down. We are losing touch with our natural circadian rhythm, and most peoples work schedules prevent them from getting to full recovery.

Sleep is a time to rebuild, and to dream travel.  Both are very important.

I have been careful to craft a lifestyle that rarely has need of an “ALARM” clock

When we miss sleep we build up a “sleep deficit”.  This is like a bill that we owe, and it will catch up to us eventually.  Beauty, muscle tone, and Chi are developed while sleeping.  There may be more advanced techniques for those who choose meditative and monastic lives, however that is not most of us.

Where I sleep has been described as “a prison camp bed”.  I like to sleep on a firm surface. My bed is about 8 inches tall and is a simple zen-style wooden platform.  The mattress is an unbleached Shiatsu futon that is about 1.5 inches thick.  This arrangement has served me for some time.

I am not a fan of traditional Western style sheets and pillows.  My pillow is buckwheat hull filled, and I have a simple, unfitted sheet atop the futon. Still, I like the simplicity and minimalism of my current sleep space.

How did you come to being raw and who was the biggest influence?

I first encountered “raw” at the age of 15 when a friend of mine intuited it. He began to eat this way by simple revelation.  Later that year my tattoo artist turned me on to a book called “The Grape Cure” which was a raw grape cleanse.  This was in the early days of the internet, before information and networking were so highly developed.  At that time rawfoods was dominated by the thinking of the Natural Hygienists.  So much has changed since then.

My early rawfood experiences were very dogmatic, and I lived for several years as a fruitarian, and for 10 years as a vegan.  Today I see both of these approaches as great ways to cleanse, both physically and Karmicly, though I would say (after 15 years of experience) that both approaches are dangerous long term.

We have seen many changes, and the introduction of so called “SuperFoods” is just one of these. The ideology has shifted significantly, both for better and for worse.  It is exciting to see so many folks making such wonderful strides towards better eating.  It is unfortunate to see it so dominated by eating disorders, confusion, empty utopian philosophies, and pseudo experts.

Rawfoodists would benefit from taking a step back from the frenzy and hype, and getting real about a few things.  Simply eating food that is not cooked will not bestow immortality, heal all ills, and produce spiritual enlightenment.  It is, in its modern form, not even a complete or well formed diet as of yet.

What is great about it is the way it gets us to look at food and ourselves, the opportunity to detoxify many of the Water soluble and fat soluble toxins that we have ingested and encountered, as well as taking us back to the basics so that we can restructure a diet that makes sense.

My sincere hope is to see this community shed the dogma and religiosity that has been dominating it.  Especially its unfounded and poorly thought through obsession with veganism and breatharianism.  I think these ideas are hurting us.  Again, I say this having met many of the “leading minds” in this “movement”, as well as the two most prominent ”breatharians”.

What do you feel moms need to be aware of when trying to transition their young families?

Great question.  This one is delicate, and as a man I appreciate the opportunity to share.  Everything I offer is from my heart, and I in no way can know what it is like to be a pregnant or developing mother, or to raise a family.

Here goes…Moms have a unique responsibility, in that they are not just experimenting with themselves, but also with their children and their families.  I would suggest, rather than looking to those whose dietary self experimentation comes from having read a few books and having a website, looking to our ancestors whose wisdom about sustainable reproduction was tested by thousands of years of tribal experimentation.

For instance, many tribal and indigenous peoples would prepare a mother-to-be nutritionally for at least a year or two before conception.  This was done to ensure that she could provide all she would need to for her developing child in addition to coming through healthfully on the other side. There was also a taboo on having a second child without a similar re-feeding process.

Mothers today are most often nutritionally bankrupted before and definitely after birth.  There are very essential nutrients that are passed from mother to child, and if these are missing in the diet (and usually are, raw or not) will be stripped off of the mothers nervous system.  This leads to emotional and physical issues after the birth.  We have names and diagnosis for this, though we seem as a culture to be unaware of how to address it.  Our ancestors understood this well, and took measures to compensate.  We would be wise to study their indigenous ways rather than trusting the newest theories or “superfoods” that hit the market or literature, alternative or conventional.

Moms, be sure to get enough long chain omega 3’s.  By this I am talking about DHA and EPA. Also know that circumcision is an ancient ritual marking and very traumatic and unnecessary.  It is an affront on male sexuality, and is no different to what we call “female circumcision” in some Muslim cultures. Also, there is no substitute for your breast milk.  Period.  Many wonderful mothers have come to find this out after the fact.  And this is ok.  Forgive yourself, and begin to take measures to feed your young one in ways to compensate.

Keep your children from the doctors and dentists.  If there is Mercury in any of your family members do the research and get it out.  Avoid pharmaceutical drugs and surgeries like the plague!  They are useless and harmful except in the rarest of emergencies.  This may seem extreme in the beginning but is the obvious conclusion over time and from experience.

There is so much to say here, but I think that we can draw conclusions by looking to our ancestors and to nature.

In transitioning your families and children it is key to remember that good food tastes better and is more satisfying.  Be careful not to set up a confrontational situation for yourself.  Go slow, and appreciate others rights to choose.

Know that schools will seem to work against you.  Be realistic.  And ask yourself, why are my kids in a school to begin with.  Maybe it is time to begin educating them at home!

Be well informed before trying to push children into veganism, and be sure that what you are feeding them has been time tested.  Become informed about what foods are most hazardous to their endocrine systems, including soy, flax, and many other seeds.  These phytoestrogens are just beginning to be recognized by our community and are reeking more havoc on children than adults.

Encourage relationships to nature for your children, and take them to springs and farms.  Children love to forage, so sign up for herb walks or get them out into the woods.

Are you trying to indoctrinate your children into a cult of diet, or are you looking to develop their communion with the natural world of health and healing.  This is an important distinction to make!

As a guy, do you have any tips for ladies trying to win-over their partners whom may not be all ‘raw, raw, raw’ over the idea of giving up their meat and potatoes?

Yes!  I think that there are a few things that can really help.  It is important to understand the underlying motivations of this archetypical “meat and potatoes” man you describe.

First, lets be honest, this man does not see the “new ideal” of the metro-sexual yogi vegetarian male as much to strive for.  Trying to push or persuade them with weight loss, cancer, anti-aging, etc are not very effective.

What is most important to this kind of man is his perceived masculinity and feelings of being an able provider.  It is his performance.

As I have been mentioning throughout this interview, veganism is not likely to be very attractive to this kind of male.  It might be wise to drop this from your approach and instead to guide by implanting ideas that lead towards an increased sense of maleness.

For instance…  If the average man understood that the hormone altering affects of many of the foods in his diet were leading him into premature andropause (ie, soy or vegetable oil, found in almost all processed foods) and therefore a loss of his precious sexuality and performance, he would likely begin to see things differently.

Also, what about the hops in beer?  They turn out to be one of, if not the most, estrogenic food substances consumed by humans…  This is why they create a physique that looks more like those ancient goddess statuettes than a chiseled Greek god!

That the hormone altering affects of plastics or the pharmaceuticals that are showing up in the municipal tap water are leading to a diminished production of androgens (male sex hormones) and causing them to lose their “edge”, their vigor, and their well…  Things get a bit flaccid if you know what I mean.

Your partner may get excited about herbalism when he discovers effective natural “viagra” like substances.  Yohimbe comes to mind.  Believe me, this one is effective.  Not just some claim like we hear about foods like maca… This one gets you there…  Like a rock.

It may pique his interest to know that herbs, like Ginseng allowed the Taoist sages to live long lives, beyond what modern man believes possible, and to have active sex lives even into their very late years!  Herbs like maca and nettle root can prevent prostate enlargement and keep serum testosterone from becoming estrogens!

Herbs like Pine Pollen actually contain Testosterone, and can be used much like a natural steroid!

He might want to know that de-mineralization will cause his hair to go grey early.

This is how you motivate a man.  Not by badgering, scolding, or trying to convince him to auto-emasculate through the consumption of flax crackers!  Men can sense this a mile away, and will run in the other direction…

Raw meats and eggs (look at ideas like the “primal-diet” or “instinctive eating”) can be just the thing that get him motivated and keep him vital.  It is likely that he is not seeing many role models within the rawfood world that are displaying what he would like to have!

And then there is the effect on the taste of his…………..

Like myself, I know you are into Martial arts.  Tell me a little about your discipline. What else do you do for exercise, say, outdoors?

Great question!

First let me say that what we are talking about here is making a serious and clear commitment to Survival.  No matter what.  Always.  That is the point of martial training.  It is the art of staying alive, of having what it takes to confront your moment of truth.

But, we throw around terms like “martial arts” pretty lightly in our culture.  Lets have a closer look. Martial comes from the word Mars, and Mars is the god of war and warfare.  Therefore “martial arts” are martian or war arts.  There are very few of these left, and most are sport versions of the arts that they stem from.  This is wonderful and timely.

It is not very good table conversation today, and especially in our subculture, to discuss war and its strategic application.  What I will say is that the martial studies exist in perfect balance to the study of healing.  My personal philosophy is that the study of war, which is destructive or disassembling in nature, better informs ones ability to understanding healing, which is constructive and assembling in nature.

The study of both, and the mastery of both is a worthy, albeit uncommon pursuit.  One issue that I think many of us perceive in modern exercise methods is that they are physical expenditures of energy that seem to have no purpose other than the tonifying of our bodies and burning away the food we have just spent our money and labor on.  Martial arts are fantastic forms of physical culture and purposeful learning.  They are functional, and do not (assuming one finds a valuable art) produce the mediocrity that treadmill types of exercise encourage.

I will keep my “art” personal and allow you to take a guess.  I will offer this…  Any true warrior art includes every aspect of physicality.  Therefore all experiences in nature feed back into the Way of the Warrior, whether walking through the forest or climbing a sheer cliff.  Swimming in the ocean or cartwheeling through a park…  All physical endeavors and experiences of nature are part of my training.  They are also part of my healing…  How perfect.  Remember that it is about training for Survival under any circumstance.

What kinds of training would you do if you were literally training to be prepared to Survive anything?  How much Fun would/could you have with this?

Also, a good friend and fellow Warrior/Healer once said to me “one who knows how to break a bone should also know how to heal one”…This is the way of the Warrior.  The Evolution of the Warrior Path is the Warrior~Mystic….  The Warrior~Mystic does more than simply Survive…  They SurThrive.  They know that they are the creators of the reality they experience, and therefore can Thrive no matter what the circumstance.  To me this duel path, the martial arts coupled with the healing arts, breeds the Warrior~Mystic…

How do you keep yourself motivated?  What is your spiritual practice?

The secret for me has been to understand what the source of motivation truly is.  It is Pleasure and Pain.  If we perceive something to be more pleasurable than painful we will continue forward with it.  If the pain becomes greater than the Pleasure we will discontinue.  We are really that simple.

I have learned (to some extent) to manipulate my behavior with this principle.  Lets imagine that you wanted to begin a new exercise regimen.  Likely the thing that has kept you from it was the perception that it would be painful..  Either boring, laborious, tiring, time-consuming, etc… The perceived pleasure is dulled by the perceived pain.

What if you could amplify the pleasure that you believed it would offer.  A better looking and feeling physique, a pain free body, looking better in and out of your clothes, self confidence and the feeling of more time in the day.  What if you amplified the perceived pain of not beginning this regimen?  The pain and discomfort you presently feel in your body, the little aches and pains.  The tiredness that comes from sedentary living.  Feeling the lack of tone and metabolic fire that comes from avoiding exercise.  The Fear of weight gain and its associated dis-eases.

The real secret to this is to feel the pain and pleasure.  Simply thinking of them will not work.  This must be felt and experienced. It works very well when attempting to eliminate a food that we may have had an addictive pattern with.

Who in the raw community is exciting to you and personally inspiring?

I am inspired by the integrity and wisdom of the new generation.  Those who have not yet picked up the mantle of teaching.  The generation before mine paved the way for me, and I and my generation are clearing the way for those to come.  They are far more real and integral than I can yet conceive.  They are the evolution of our ideas and response to the stimulus of our modern environment.  These are your children Moms!  The improved models!!!

Are you in a relationship?  Is she raw?  Would you ever be with someone who wasn’t raw?  Does she have to be as raw as you?  Any thoughts to how you will raise your children one day?

Hahaha.  Single White Male, Enjoys the Elements, Consciousness and Cacao Beans.

There are so many wonderful women, and I do not measure them by percentages of “rawness”. Any woman who would occupy that sacred space with me would have to have incredibly high standards about what she chooses to be built from.  Not just because I would want her to, but because to function with me at the level that I choose to, she would have to.

What type of woman interests and excites you?  What qualities do you look for?

What most entices and enthralls me are women who have tread a similar path.  Those who embrace their femininity and mastered their own bodies.  Those who understand their moon cycle and the magick of their intuitive ability.

I am not very attracted to mere mortals.  I appreciate goddesses, women who can embrace their full potential and independence.  I am most attracted to women who have learned to differentiate reality and possibility from the story book “find your value through your prince charming” fantasy stories of their childhoods.

I am not attracted to Barbie dolls and high heels.  I like natural Elven Princesses and Queens.  Those who know the herbs and animals and the power of their dreams.

What is your idea of a ‘perfect day for Daniel’?

Every day contains the possibility of enlightenment!  The days that I enjoy most are the result of remaining in the flow of creative energy and anabolic expression.  Perfect days are the result of loving myself and embracing the possibility of all I am capable of.  When days are less than perfect I know I am letting fear, futility, and contraction rule me.

It is less about “good days” and “bad days” and more about mastery of cycles.  Everything is cyclical.  The natural result of a high is a low, every  wave crest is followed by its trough.  The full moon is followed by the new, and the Summer Solstice is the balance of that of Winter.

What is more valuable than trying to stay “high” and avoid “lows” is to know the place, purpose, and usefulness of all things.  The pursuit of this kind of mastery is meta-fulfilling and, I feel, a very noble and worthy pursuit.

What does a ‘typical’ day look like for you in terms of your diet?

This is a loaded question…  So, I am excited to answer it!

First, let me be clear, there is no place that we ever “get to” with regards to what we eat.  This is, like so many other pursuits, an ever evolving and changing quest.  I remember attending a lecture, when I had been 16 times around the sun, with a prominent rawfoods educator.  He mentioned that he had been on his diet path for 14 years, and then proceeded to explain what he was “working on” with his nutrition approach.  I remember thinking “after 14 years you don’t have it nailed down yet???!!!

Today, after a decade and a half of intense nutritional education and experience, I am still always developing and shifting my approach.

I no longer subscribe to any one idea, so things like Veganism, Rawfoods, Superfoods, and the like no longer hold the powerful sway they once did.  I have come to understand that all approaches contain seeds of value, though each on has its inherent limitations, and can only take you so far.
Lao Tzu said that if you lean on any one idea too long it collapses.  I have found this to be consistently true (and I am sure it is true for this saying as well!).

My diet goes through cycles and changes.  Last year a typical day looked like fresh spring water in the morning, an Elixir in the early day, and a raw vegetable meal in the evening with seeds and nuts, and sea vegetables.  At that time I was eating a lot of my daily calories from sugars in the form of honey and agave. This winter my diet contained more steamed vegetables, quinoa, and raw, grass fed dairy products.  I also began a fairly intensive exploration of raw meats, and this allowed me to significantly reduce my sugar intake.

Right now I find a rhythm with spring water early in the morning, sometimes with MSM, shilajit, and other “supplements”.  I like to have some calories by noon, and this is almost always in the form of an Elixir.  This will often contain things like fresh teas made form herbs, medicinal mushrooms, barks, or flowers.  Added to it are things like coconut butter, chia seeds, cashews, spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, etc…

I have been sweetening with powdered stevia leaf (not the extracted kinds) lately, and really reducing my consumption of mono- and di- saccharides.  I also like mesquite, different salts, cacao butter, chlorella, etc…Lots of berries (of all types), and of course cacao!  Nibs are my favorite for drinks, though powdered cacao is also on the menu.

These drinks are often half of my daily food intake.  I like to balance them with an evening meal of raw or steamed vegetables, with olive oil, salt, and lemon or vinegar, as well as herbs like rosemary, thyme, basil, sage, oregano, etc…  Often my evening meal will be raw meats, bone marrow, or other animal foods, either as is, or with a bit of spice, like salts, cayenne, peppercorn (a berry), chipotle, coriander, etc…  I tend not to mix animal and vegetable foods too often.

I also enjoy fermented condiments with my evening foods, often sour krauts, kim-chee, or kombucha…  These aid in digestion, lower stomach pH, and feed us abundantly with vital organisms that we call probiotics.  As I mentioned, this is ever changing, shifting, and evolving, just like me.  I hope that your approach does too!  Eating the same foods for too long leads to at best boredom and at worst allergy and malnourishment!  For many of those reading this, our diets have become a sort of “Hero’s Quest”.  This means that the pursuit of refinement is a purpose unto itself.  As it should be.

Anything else you would love to add, dear?

Just some closing words.  You are an expression of the infinite divine.  Both darkness and light emanate from the same source.  Embrace all that is, and know that you are projecting the reality you are experiencing.  If there are things you would like to change in your life, look within.  The source is there.  If you struggle to change the outside world you will be forever lost in illusion.

Change is the nature of all things.  This situation that we face today on Earth feels frightening and confusing.  It is a cycle of change so vast that we can barely conceive it.  Be patient and remember that you are here for self-mastery.  Even the ability to love and relate is born of self mastery.  Use this experience, this lifetime for all it is worth.  And embrace the change.  It is inevitable!  Thank you, Shannon.

Interview with a Diva: Brigitte Mars

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by Lisa

If you caught the inspired article Brigitte wrote for us several posts back, you will already know what an incredible woman she truly is.  She is a wealth of great, useable information, and she really does walk her talk.  Her daughter is RAINBEAU MARS who many of you have heard of.  Rainbeau is a raw yogini, and a mom herself!  I would love to have her featured sometime for you here on rawmom, but for now, some beautiful pictures of her will just have to do!  In the meantime, enjoy these beautiful words and delcious recipes from the generous spirit which is Brigitte Mars…

brigittePlease tell us about your first experience of hearing about Raw, and who inspired you?  How raw did you go?  How raw are you currently, and how do you maintain it?

In the mid 1970’s, I tried being raw. But back then, the only organic produce available was carrots and apples and most natural food stores didn’t carry produce at all. When I would talk about raw, no one had ever heard of anyone doing it here. “After all”, everyone said, “It’s too cold in Colorado. You need to eat cooked food in a cold climate.” I studied Macrobiotics, Herbal Medicine, Oriental Medicine, Vitamin Therapy, Flower Essences, and Homeopathy. Eventually, I began to teach classes on Natural Medicine institutions such as the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, Naropa University and the Boulder College of Massage.  I became the herbalist for one of the nation’s largest natural food stores, and  for thirteen years and promoted multitudes of remedies, potions, pills and tinctures. I have had a private practice and written scores of magazine articles and several books.

I had always considered our family following a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Though, pretty much all food was cooked, except for the occasional salad and piece of fruit. Organic produce became more available. As the years went by, my lovely children became complicated teens. I surrended to serving whole wheat bagels,  pasta dishes, veggie burgers, homecooked vegetarian chili and other things I was glad they would eat. “At least it’s organic!” I would say to myself.

When Sunflower and Rainbeau were teenagers, they admitted to me that they were sometimes eating meat at their friend’s houses. I wasn’t pleased, but appreciated their honesty and decided that it would be better if I prepared an organic chicken once a week than them eating commercial God knows what God knows where.  This was after my  having been vegetarian for twenty three years. I actually felt better consuming some animal protein and this continued for several years, till I became raw.

Middle aged. I found myself making cakes (with unrefined sugar) once a week, organic chocolate chip cookies, meat, and  quick cooking rice. Always, we included some wild greens and felt healthy about that. However the truth was, I still struggled with acne and was getting heavier and middle-aged pudgy, despite skipping dinners,  and drinking “natural diet shakes”. My bikini days were definitely over.

My husband, Tom Pfeiffer, frequently had digestive problems that caused him sleepless nights and if ginger, umeboshi plum paste or peppermint capsules didn’t help, would resort to over the counter preparations. I had become an expert on remedies, but had not yet figured out why the problems occurred.

rainbeau-mars-picIn 1996, Rainbeau got her first movie role in, The People vs Larry Flynt.  She flew to Memphis and immediately found herself having a great time with Woody Harrelson and his brother, Brett, both of whom were into raw foods, yoga and healing the environment. Rainbeau dropped out of college and soon moved to Hollywood, like many young hopefuls to pursue  dreams of fame and fortune.

Rainbeau and I first saw Juliano in Santa Monica Wild Oats. He gave her a flyer for a raw potluck. Soon,  Rainbeau called us  in Colorado to say, “I’ve gone raw! Juliano is my new housemate. He has written a book called Raw and says, “Get your mom down here. She’ll get raw.” “Not very likely, ” I thought. “I know too much.” I had studied way too long and knew all about “cold, damp spleen,” “excess yin” and how eating tropical fruits can make one “ungrounded and spaced out.”  My big concern was that Rainbeau was getting into anorexia, like the models and actresses one reads about.

Tom and I had a trip to LA planned, to attend Natural Products Expo, the major convention for the natural foods industry. We hoped to talk some sense into her.

Our first night in LA, Juliano was hosting one of his huge raw dinners.  My husband, Tom was apprehensive on how his stomach would handle such fare. We paid a donation and  were  served a delicious raw vegetarian meatloaf with cauliflower mashed potatoes. We drank coconut water. It was all amazingly delicious. There we met David Wolfe, author of The Sunfood Diet and Success System, at the dinner. We had to admit, Rainbeau looked healthier and more beautiful than ever. We weren’t worried, just grateful for Juliano.

The next day, Rainbeau and I left for Anaheim to attend the convention, while Tom had business to attend to in LA. I gave an herb walk  at a botanical garden, and spent time at the allGoode Organic booth, who are the fine people that bought UniTea Herbs, the company Tom and I had started more than sixteen years ago.

Rather than walking through the convention and tasting every free sample of  tofu hot-dog, organic chocolate bars and frozen vegan pizza, I noticed that very little of the “health food” was raw. No wonder we needed to devote one third of the show to vitamins and herbal remedies. “Natural foods” might be good, but they had not brought us perfect health! Macaroni and cheese in a box, though wholewheat and organic, was still processed food.

Friday night, Rainbeau and I were invited to a small party sponsored by  HempNut. TM I had recently written The HempNut Health and Cookbook with Richard Rose. A wonderful young man was playing guitar. We liked what he was singing about. It all rang true. His name was Jeremy Safron. He had been raw for eight years. I bought two copies of his book, The Raw Truth for Rainbeau and myself.

rainbeau-mars-pic-2 Tom and I returned to Boulder. I decided that I would be raw for a year to support my Rainbeau. Surprisingly, Tom loved the food and would sit down to meals saying, “You’re saving me.” His digestion had so much improved. I went through a bit of a detox. My skin broke out worse than it had in years, then got better than ever.

We sponsored David Wolfe to teach a one day workshop in our courtyard. We were amazed how the workshop filled with barely any effort. It was also delightful that making lunch for sixty five people was so easy, when I remembered the stress and toil of a cooked dinner party for ten! A few months into being raw, I really prayed about whether this was the right path for me. My answer was, “Think of The Doctrine of Signatures.” The Doctrine of Signatures is an ancient philosophy that shows how plants speak to us by the way they look, grow, smell and taste.  (For example kidney beans strengthen the kidneys, cauliflower the brain, etc.) It was so simple!  Did I want to feel baked, fried and toasted? Or did I want to feel fresh, alive and vital. The Urantia Book says that Adam and Eve (not the first humans -that’s another story) were raw foodists.

“While cooking was universally employed outside the immediate Adamic sector of Eden, there was no cooking in Adam’s household. They found their foods-fruits, nuts and cereals-ready prepared and ripened.”  The Urantia Book.

Tom and I both attended a workshop given by Viktoria and Igor Boutenko, authors of The Raw Family. Igor gave us the most powerful massages. We could feel such amazing movement of energy. We were blessed to have the Boutenkos stay at out house during their workshop. No spaced out deficiency there!

My teaching of herbal medicine has changed. I wanted to talk about raw foods. I still love herbs and have found many of my herbal allies make great salad additions and fresh green juices.

Two years have passed. When I went to Anaheim’s Natural Product’s Expo this year, my friends wanted to know, “What have you been doing? You look younger! More slender! Your skin is great!”

It amazes me how something so simple, time saving, and money conserving  isn’t what everyone is doing. Now a trip to the grocery store yields four bags of groceries for $100 rather than one or two bags. We feel great. Sign me up. I’m sticking with the program. Every day I wake up feeling blessed to be raw and wonder why it took so long to find it again. I’m glad I studied so many other things. My horizons have been expanded all around the globe, studying the medicine of a multitude of cultures that are not all that healthy. Such a beautiful simple truth, to return to raw.

Can you please offer us a few of your fave recipes?

SUNFLOWER PÂTÉ
1 1/2 cups raw sunflower seeds, soaked overnight, then allowed to sprout for 3 hours
1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup tamari or 1 teaspoon sea salt
3 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 clove garlic
1 teaspoon sliced fresh ginger
Run the above ingredients through a food processor. Serve on sandwiches or on salad. Add some chopped celery for a tuna-salad substitute. Excellent on sandwiches or to top a salad.

FLAX CRACKERS
I once threw a soggy flax cracker out in the yard, and it grew in to hundreds of flax plants. Now that’s live food!
2 cups flax seeds
4 cups water
1/4 cup dried kelp
Soak the seeds in the water 15 minutes. Stir in the dried kelp. Spread the mixture onto three solid dehydrator sheets. Dehydrate for 4 hours. Remove the dehydrator sheets and turn over the crackers. Continue dehydrating until they are crisp (about 4 to 6 hours). When dry, the crackers will keep indefinitely.
Makes 2-3 trays of crackers.
Variations on Flax Crackers
Any of the following can be substituted for kelp in Flax Crackers:
Sliced bananas
Sliced apples
Raisins
Cinnamon
Celtic salt
Chopped tomatoes
Corn cut from the cob
Chopped red peppers
Chopped onions
Chili powder
Basil
Chives
Cilantro
Garlic

DRIED FRUIT JAM
Jam on sprouted crackers with almond butter, anyone?
1/2 cup raisins, soaked overnight
1/2 cup dried figs, soaked overnight
1/2 cup dried apricots, soaked overnight
Remove the fruit from the soaking water and place in a blender; reserve the soaking water. Add a bit of the water, pulse until well mixed, and keep adding water until the mixture achieves a jamlike consistency. Store in the refrigerator, where the jam will keep for about 2 weeks.
Makes about 3 cups.

APRICOT PUDDING
Nothing is easier. Try garnishing the dish with pine nuts.
1 cup dried apricots, soaked 4 hours in 1 cup water
Place the apricots in a food processor and puree. Serve in cups.
Makes 2 servings.

BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING
The ultimate comfort food can be extraordinary.
1 cup dried apricots, soaked overnight in water (reserve water)
2 bananas, peeled
8 dates, soaked 20 minutes
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup raw almond butter (available at natural foods stores)
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and puree.
Makes 4 servings.

CAROB PUDDING
1/2-cup raw almonds soaked overnight. Rinse in the morning.
2 ripe bananas
1/2-cup water
2 tablespoons carob powder
1/2 cup pitted dates
Blend all ingredients together in a blender or food processor till smooth. Garnish with a mint leaf or strawberry slice.

HEALTHY FUDGE
1 cup tahini or almond butter
1/2 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons chocolate powder
1 tablespoon fresh chopped mint leaves
!/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
Mix all the ingredients together and roll into balls. Roll in sesame seeds or coconut and chill. Coconut can be colored red by mixing with a bit of beet juice.

STUFFED DATES
Stuff pitted dates with raw almond butter or tahini. Makes a great substitute for chocolate!

Interview with a Diva: Rory Freedman

Friday, March 27th, 2009 by Lisa

When I read the book SKINNY BITCH, by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin , I was pleased to find hard-hitting, no b.s. info and accounts of what is happening with our food supply, animals, and just how we lull ourselves with falsehoods and sabotage our own health.  I applaud Rory Freedman and her partner for being so clever with their title and writing-style which is provocative and edgy.  They have done much to bring the message of raw foods and compassion to animals to the masses, and I thank them both!

I recently had the opportunity to ask a few questions of Rory Freedman and I’m thrilled to be able to share this interview with everyone!  Without further ado…

g-photo-credit-lelah-foster-rory-freedmanRory, I loved your book and I can’t wait to learn a little more about you!   Briefly tell us about your raw journey, who inspired you, and about how raw you are.

Tim VanOrden is a friend of mine, and I’m blown away by his accomplishments as a raw athlete. I’m also in constant awe of all the amazing food he makes. Kris Carr is one of my dearest, soul-sister friends and she inspires me in every way, shape, and form. She’s a beacon of beauty, light, and laughter. And in general, I’m envious of so many people in the raw community who are living the life, as I’m not yet there.

You are so gorgeous! Do you have any raw beauty secrets you could share with our readers?

I would imagine that all your readers know more raw beauty secrets than I do! But one of my favorites is coconut oil-when I’m feeling really dry, I use it as face cream, body lotion, and hair moisturizer. (But then I have to hide from my dogs.)

The one product that I can’t live without isn’t raw, but it’s really natural and lovely: Dirty Hippie Soaps’ Kissin Stick (Herbie flavor). It is literally the best lip balm I’ve ever used in my entire life. I’m obsessed with it and want everyone else to be, too.

skinnybitch-book-coverI know from your books that when you eat cooked food, it is vegan and quite healthy; do have any desire to go more raw with your diet, and do you have any other health and wellness goals?

Compared to the real world, yes, my diet is healthy. But compared to the raw world, I could improve a lot. If I were being my best, healthiest food-self, I’d eat more raw salads and would juice greens daily.

Talking to women at signings and events, what is the main reaction you get about your work?

The main reaction is that because the book was written in an informal, irreverent way, it is a fast, funny read, easy to understand, and “life changing.”  People are permanently transformed after reading about factory farms and slaughterhouses.

How do you juggle all that you have on your plate now with the success of the books and has it been a major change for you, and what is the most challenging?

Time and stress management are tough ones for me. Some days there are a million meetings, emails, phone calls, interviews, and deadlines, and I get stressed out and overwhelmed. And then on top of that I feel guilty, like I’m not being a good dog mom. Remembering to stay Zen and present is a constant battle. I can usually decompress on my daily hike with my dogs, and my girlfriends and I send each other daily gratitude lists, which is also a big help. But overall, I really can’t complain. I have the best friends in the world, a job I love, and the understanding that the success itself doesn’t mean anything.

Competition in the industry is crazy- how did you know how to get your manuscript to the right publishers?

And what do you think is the reason behind the success of your books besides its timely message, ie is it marketing, promotion, the right cover….? Please share your insights.

Skinny Bitch Journal CoverThe Universe was behind me every step of the way. Probably days after having the idea to write Skinny Bitch, I had dinner with some old friends who I hadn’t seen or spoken to in years. I told them I wanted to write a book and they told me they had just gotten a publishing deal and that I should try submitting a proposal to their literary agent. The book, Writer’s Market, was invaluable in teaching me what to submit to the agent and how to do it. Once I got representation, the literary agent handled everything from there.

As for the book’s success, certainly the cheap, provocative title gets consumers’ attention, especially since so many women struggle with their weight. But the real draw is the compelling information inside. Most people have no idea about nutrition; many think diet soda is healthy! To learn some fundamental things about the foods they eat every day-it’s shocking and motivating, and people are keen on sharing what they’ve learned with their friends and loved ones.

What do you see as women’s biggest obstacles with eating healthy- and how can we overcome them?

There are so many different obstacles. Some women have the information and desire to eat well, but time is an issue. Other women are ruled by their emotions, and they eat to feel good, to blanket feelings, or to numb out completely. And others are just dangerously clueless. I think the key for overcoming any obstacle, food-related or otherwise, is to identify your weakness and decide how committed you are to beating it. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Do you have a spiritual practice?

Oh, I am constantly practicing not beating myself up for not keeping up with my spiritual practices. Yoga, meditation, and journaling are all available to me when I am available to them.

I’m easily distracted and somewhat unstructured, so I like little doses of lots of things. I’m consistent in doing what I feel that day, that moment. Whether it’s listening to a Kabbalah CD, zoning out to Prana music, doing five minutes of yoga, dancing in my apartment, affirming my intentions, or weeping while making my gratitude list, I indulge my spiritual self regularly.

How much do other lifestyle factors like exercise, fresh air, sleep, etc factor in?  How much sleep do you get a night?  And how late do you typically eat at night?

If I have a book deadline, I can be a really naughty girl and stay up until 4am and sleep until noon the next day. It’s hard, but I try not to feel bad about being a night owl in general. My mom is a night owl, her mom was a night owl, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been one. (My mom recently told me she used to keep my sister and me awake late at night as babies so we’d be more likely to sleep later in the mornings and let her sleep.) On a typical night, I’ll eat as late as midnight, go to bed around 2am, and get up around 10am. I know it sounds like a fraternity guy’s schedule, but it works for me. I’m not big on eating in the morning. I like to get my 7-8 hours of sleep, go hiking with the dogs (and then maybe go to the gym or yoga), and then eat fruit for breakfast around 1 or 2pm when I get home.

Anything else you would like to add, advice to women in general about diet or success or living with purpose…?

Whatever you want to do, be, or have, it is possible!

Guilt is entirely useless.

Eat well, enjoy food, and love your body no matter what!

ani_headshot_smallWhat message would you like to share with our moms today?

Greetings Raw Super Moms! I know how busy you are raising your little ones, and how important it is to you to feed your family healthy food, but that you have very little time to spend in the kitchen. Here’s where I can help by offering my fast, easy, delicious, and nutritious recipe ideas. Most you can make with you kids. It’s fun play that nourishes our body and soul, while preserving our planet for future generations.

Since fresh raw organic whole foods offer the highest nutrient content, we’re getting more for our money. Shopping locally and seasonally means produce is fresher, lasts longer, spoils less, and less is wasted. Keep your money in your community and support your local organic farmers. To save more money, pack your own healthy food and snacks to take with you and your family when you’re in your car, out for the day, or on a road trip.

How long have you been raw, how raw are you and have there been anyone in particular in the raw community who inspired you or inspires you?

I was 100% raw for 8 years, was raised on about 80% raw by a raw foodie dad. I was forced to drink veggie juices holding my breath, did lots of mono dieting, and tended to our organic garden as a child. The past 2 years I’ve added some cooked foods back into my diet, and have been studying macrobiotics. Today, depending on time of year and my goals, I’ll fluctuate between 100% and 80% raw. I embrace moderation, and take my climate, weather, fitness, schedule, and well-being into account.

You are so gorgeous! Do you have any raw beauty secrets you could share with our readers?

Nutrify by eating nutrient-rich, fresh, whole raw foods and superfoods like veggies, fruits, nuts, and seeds for vitamins, minerals, and omegas. I love using coconut oil on my skin and in my hair. I enjoy fresh (rather than dehydrated) foods to stay hydrated. Water keeps my skin moist and plump. I make sure to sweat daily by enjoying some form of cardio. I have a daily mediation practice. Plus, I do my best to find time to do fun things that make me happy, like taking Improvisation classes and laughing my head off, listening to my favourite music and dancing, and playing and hiking with my dog in nature.

What does a typical day in your life look like?

My days vary depending on the projects I have on my plate. Lately, I wake between 5 and 8, meditate anywhere from 15 min to an hour. I then feed my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Kanga, then take her for a walk. Feed myself a smoothie. Check emails and messages, have meetings. I’ll workout, run, or hike from about 11 to 1 or so, then eat lunch around 2ish. Sometimes I’ll have meetings to attend or errands to run in the afternoon, other days I’ll be at my computer and on the phone. I eat dinner between 6 and 8pm. Then either get more work done, or take time to read. I’ll meditate 15 min to 1 hour before bed. Bedtime is between 10pm and midnight. Some nights it’s later.

When do you eat your meals, at what times?  Do you have a time that you don’t eat after?

Breakfast: 8-10am

Lunch: 12-2pm

Dinner: 6-8pm

Snacks throughout the day until 11pm, sometimes later, if I’m hungry.

How much sleep do you get?

It various. Ideally I enjoy 6-8 hours a night, but sometimes I go on a couple hours.

Please share with our moms one of your favourite recipes!

SURE! Kids love making my Cranberry Coconut Almond Cookies and they keep and travel well.  I made these for a kid’s fun shop, you can see photos here.

Cranberry Coconut Almond Cookies

  • 1 cup almonds, process into chunks

One last question. Please tell us what is the latest project you are working on?

My next book, my shows, and my appearances at Expo West in early March in Anaheim.

My Desserts book, called “Ani’s Raw Food Desserts”, will be available early May. Working on my book tour for May, and will be in the UK and London in early June. Please write to me if you’d like me to come to your city: ani_phyo@yahoo.com. I’d love to hear from you, and will do my best to visit! Thank you Shannon, and all the RAWMOMS- you RAWK!
