Monkey Mike Competition Winners!

Hello!

A couple of months ago, we created a competition for the release of our children’s recipe book – Monkey Mike’s Raw Food Kitchen: An Un-Cookbook for Kids – and now, we are announcing the winners!

Entrants were asked to draw a picture of them creating a banana, strawberry and mango smoothie with Monkey Mike. We also asked them to create a wacky name for the smoothie.

We had two age categories – one for children aged seven to nine, and the other for children aged 10 to 12. And our winners are (drum roll, please):

Xavier (age 7) and Catherine (age 10), both from Australia!

Xavier called his smoothie the “BSM Rockstar Smoothie”, and Catherine called hers the “Jupiter-Boopiter-Mango-Bango-Monkey-Mike-Smoothie”.

Xavier and Catherine both received a beautiful package in the mail, consisting of a “Kitchen Starter Pack” comprising a mixing bowl, a multi-size measuring cup, a tea towel, a citrus juicer, a mini whisk, a mini spatula and an orange peeler. They also received digital copies of the Monkey Mike book!

Congratulations to both of our winners, and we hope the Kitchen Starter Packs and book have seen you whipping up a storm in the kitchen!

The Day Daniel Vitalis Came To My House

molmI host a raw vegan potluck at my home each month. To shake things up a bit, I’ve been trying to schedule speakers to come and give talks on subjects that are a bit on the outskirts of the raw vegan community. As my first speaker, I thought it would be appropriate to invite Daniel Vitalis to come and speak about elixirs. It was fitting, of course, given that he often gets touted as “the bad boy of the raw food world.” Outskirts seems to be his forte.

We first got turned onto Daniel’s work in April when my daughter and I attended the Superhero Seminar in York, ME. Daniel was one of the featured speakers alongside David Wolfe and LivingStone. At the time, he was talking about spring water and I was convinced: OK, that’s logical. We need to get on spring water. But during the event, I was tooling around, checking out the booths. One of my friends came up to me and pointed to Daniel’s ElixirCraft course that was for sale, said, “totally worth it,” and then walked away. I stared at the CD – a course that explained how to make tinctures and cordials, among other things – and realized that I came here for this. Kind of one of those weird loopy moments where you think something that you already knew. So, I bought the course, listened to all of it… and began making our own homeopathic medicines. Within a month, Jim quit his asthma meds, I cleared out the medicine cabinet of all conventional medications, and we converted to homeopathy 100%.

Since then, we’ve found a local spring and have been drinking only spring water, have taken Daniel’s other course, Invincible Health Mastery, and have watched all his videos on YouTube. I’m making him sound like a guru, aren’t I? Either that or I’m one of his most fanatical followers. Well, he’s not and neither am I. But you have to really listen to what he’s saying and watch how he presents this information. He’s not saying anything we don’t already know (again… that weird loopy feeling): the reason we’ve forgotten our ancient wisdoms (and, yes, there are more than one) is because we’ve allowed ourselves to become domesticated, to become disempowered.

Which brings me back to the potluck. You have to know Daniel’s work on the four Elements (Air, Earth, Fire, Water) to appreciate Jim’s wanting to have him do his talk out in our Grove’s fire pit in the backyard. My husband is a Reiki Master and one of the most powerfully magickal men I know. He really resonated with Daniel’s concepts of the Elements and how each play into who we are and how we relate to the world. Jim intuited that Daniel would be into giving a talk by a fire out in the middle of the woods in the dark… and he was right.

I found that when you ask for a talk about elixirs from Daniel, you’re not going to just get some bits and bobs about how cool elixirs are. There’s a journey involved. He has to show you the starting point – which has absolutely nothing to do with elixirs – and the end point – which is really not the end of anything. All of us had gathered around the fire. Some of us sat perched on the beautiful benches Jim had made, some were squatting on the sides, and the smaller ones played in the dirt around the fire ring. After a brief introduction, Daniel, in Vibram Five Fingers, a kilt, and a Hobbit cloak, started talking.

What you immediately sense from Daniel is that while he’s talking, he’s listening. This was odd for me. I couldn’t quite figure it out at first, but then I started to see that he was listening to something deep within himself, listening to the forest around him, and listening to all the people feeding back at the fire. Everything was of equal value, everything was information that could be assimilated. What was happening here? I tried listening to what he was saying while employing “bigger listening” – to the energies around the fire, the environment around me – and got bombarded with too much information. Is this what Daniel keeps referring to as domestication? Was it possible that this type of tuning in was a common thing in the past? I don’t believe that Daniel has any special superhuman powers, but I do believe that he’s tuned in or more “awake.” I want that.

There has been a lot to unpack from his talk – things he said, things he didn’t say, things I felt – that I need to incorporate. It felt like he simply showed me that I had a key for a door I didn’t know existed. And I’m not so sure that I would have been able to appreciate his talk had I not done all my introspective work over the years. I don’t believe in gurus; I believe in people coming into your life because you’ve called them there to point you in the direction you intuitively know you need to go.

“LIVING IN THE GLOW”, LIVING RAW FOOD

My sons and I were visiting a bookstore recently when my youngest ran up to me and said ‘Your friend has another book!’ and handed me Sarma’s gorgeous LIVING RAW FOOD.  Her glowing self graces the cover and inside is a spread of vibrant color and juicy recipes that tickle the eye.  Like a den mother, Sarma describes the loving, tight-knit family atmosphere of her restaurant PURE FOOD AND WINE as ‘a little dysfunctional but always supportive’.  She even dedicated the book to her staff and customers; every detail in this book is a testament of her love.  The restaurant is so elegant and chick, really debunking the image of veganism being only for New Age hippie-types.  Actually, may stars and high-powered peeps frequent there including foreign royalty, presidents, and designers.  Sarma likes it that most of her staff lives like ‘the rest of the world meaning that many of them smoke or eat hamburgers’ because that creates an atmosphere that is non-judgemental and accessible to everyone, curious newbie and die hard raw foodie alike.  I think that is a healthy attitude that we all would do well to have so other people will feel accepted and more likely to be open to checking out our lifestyle…

Not only does she run the restaurant, writes amazing recipe books, and I do mean amazing (anything Sarma writes is candid, well articulated, outrageously fun, and real…she even shares about her own challenged relationship to food in this recipe book), Sarma runs ONE LUCKY DUCK sarma-cowhich is an online store which offers every hard to find ingredient or perfect kitchen tool, and a host of other goodies.  She breaks it all down into simple categories like ‘tools and techniques’ so you can get the skinny on dehydrating or why to use ceramic knives, what is happening to our almonds and vertical indoor farming in urban areas.

I recall when I bought her first book RAWFOOD/REALWORLD it was mostly to drool over the pictures of the gourmet raw food, and the hip, sexy Sarma…just having the book makes you feel so cool, especially when your life as a mom doesn’t always feel very glam!

But of course, that romantic image may get you in the door, but what keeps you coming back for more are the recipes!  I have interviewed Sarma for the blog before and coaxed out of her a bunch which I shared from the last book.  Here is one special recipe that is always a hit at her restaurant which looks well-worth the effort for a special treat:

From the Kitchen of Pure Food and Wine

Zucchini-and-Green-Zebra-Tomato Lasagne with Basil-Pistachio Pesto

Servings 6

Ingredients:

Lemon-Pignoli “Ricotta”

2 cups raw pignoli nuts, soaked in water for at least 1 hour
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon sea salt

Tomato Sauce

2 cups good-quality sun-dried tomatoes (dry-packed), soaked in water for at least 2 hours
1 medium ripe tomato, diced
1⁄4 small onion, chopped
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
4 teaspoons maple syrup
2 teaspoons sea salt
Pinch hot-pepper flakes

Basil-Pistachio Pesto

2 cups packed basil leaves
1⁄2 cup raw pistachios
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
Pinch freshly ground black pepper

Lasagne

3 medium zucchini, ends trimmed
3 medium green-zebra tomatoes (or other heirloom variety)
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh oregano
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Garnish: whole basil leaf

Cooking Instructions:

Lemon-Pignoli “Ricotta”

Place the pignoli, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, and salt in a food processor, and pulse a few times, until thoroughly combined. Gradually add 6 tablespoons water, and pulse until the texture becomes fluffy, like ricotta. Place in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and set aside.

Tomato Sauce

Place all ingredients in a blender, and process until smooth.

Basil-Pistachio Pesto

Place all ingredients in a blender, and process until smooth.

Lasagne

Using a mandolin or vegetable peeler, shave zucchini lengthwise into very thin slices, then cut in half crosswise. Cut the tomatoes in half, and each half into thin slices. Line the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with two layers of zucchini slices. Brush the zucchini lightly with olive oil, spread 1⁄3 of the tomato sauce over it, and top with small dollops of “ricotta” and pesto, using 1⁄3 of each. Layer on 1⁄3 of the tomato slices, and sprinkle with 1⁄3 of the oregano and thyme. Add another double layer of zucchini and repeat twice more with the tomato sauce, pesto, ricotta, tomato slices, and herbs. Serve immediately, or cover with plastic and let sit at room temperature for a few hours. Garnish with basil.

And here are 2 quickies from LIVING RAW FOOD that I have tried and loved because they are easy and delicious:

CUCUMBER-MINT GAZPACHOsarmas-gazpacho

12-14 med cucumbers peeled and seeded and chopped (I used 4 and didn’t remove the seeds)

½ cup fresh lime juice

4 jalapenos, seeded and minced (I used one and only after I filled 2 small bowls for my boys)

2 red peppers, cored and diced small

1 small handful mint leaves cut thin

sea salt

black pepper

Process the cucumbers and lime juice until it is thick and chunky

Transfer to a bowl and add the red peppers, jalepenos and mint.  Season to taste.

PLAIN CHIA PUDDING

1 cup chia seeds

3 cups nut mylk, coconut mylk or hemp seed mylk

3-5 T agave

1 t vanilla extract (optional- I used a pinch of real, raw vanilla powder)

¼ t cinnamon (optional- but so good)

pinch sea salt

Let everything combine and then sit in a bowl to set- about 20 mins in the fridge.

You can add fresh berries or dried goji berries for some zip and color.

Today I will make the APPLE CRISP- My boys will love that!

I would loooooove to try her RAVIOLI, CALIMARI, CARMEL BARS and DOLMAS, but this mom doesn’t have the time these days…although a trip to her restaurant may be considered a real nice holiday!  Her THANKSGIVING MEAL looks so innovative and delicious; I may try that this year…

FORAGING FOR WILD EDIBLES IN NATURE'S BANQUET

My husband and I are serious about cutting down on food bills, and we have found a couple of ways that are easy and fun~ SPROUTING, GARDENING and FORAGING. You all know how to sprout and grow food for pennies right on your counter tops, right?

ShakayaBreeze-StreamIt’s so easy-peasy there is no excuse not to try it. I love to grow delicious broccoli/garlic/lentil/alfalfa micro greens. I used to grow ’sunnies’ and buckwheat greens and wheatgrass with the trays of soil, but my smaller house doesn’t permit the space required, so we buy those now. Also, simple and nutritious sprouts that I regularly grow are buckwheat and oat groats that make beautiful raw porridges with fresh berries, and cinnamon. Also, I do sunflower seeds and almonds to germinate them and make them more digestible. We also have a garden for our greens and tomatoes and herbs and garlic. I’m no expert, but every year we are learning a little more, and it’s a great way to supplement our grocery budget for all the salads and green smoothies that we consume.

But the most fun of all is foraging for wild edibles. Reading about the Boutenko’s hiking adventures 7 years ago really inspired me. Igor would bravely test out new found plants along the trail before his family would eat any. But I didn’t know how to get started with 2 very little ones on our short hiking expeditions (my hubs wasn’t into raw much then and was away at work while I was with the kids)…avo-the-famI really couldn’t just experiment on myself…Over the years I have gone on many wild walks with herbalists and dear friends like Shantree Kacera and David Wolfe, reading and studying their works along with Susun Weed and taking courses here and there, plus buying some helpful books and field guides…so I am feeling more confident.

My husband travels in his work (he builds massive waterfall systems on large estates and pieces of land) and is always outdoors, so he hunts around for wild edible flowers, roots, leaves, grasses and berries and brings them home. We enjoy making teas and soups and smoothies and salads from all his harvests. A favourite has to be wild Day Lillies which are those big orange flowers that taste like plums with a spicy after taste- very exotic. We used to always forage for wild asparagus because they are so easy to spot and we knew they weren’t toxic. But now we have ventured into things like sumac, golden rod, St John’s Wort (David Wolfe calls these ‘happy flowers’ because they are a proven antidote to depression) mullen, burdock, and many other local weeds. My husband recently brought home some hardened spruce tree resin that when you sucked it and softened it, it turned bright purple and became like a chewing gum that lasted all day!

The other day our youngest got stung in the face on the lip. It quickly swelled up 4x its size. Fortunately, I knew about a handy common weed called PLANTAIN which is fantastic for bites and stings. I found some not even 6′ away, immediately chewed it up into a paste and applied it to the area. Within minutes the pain subsided. When Liam didn’t stop crying I asked what was wrong and he said with big eyes full of tears “the poor bee lost its life and there is nothing we can do about it”…well, plantain is a miracle, but not that good!

Raw Mom Summit - After Thoughts

Hey there! I MISSED YOU! I feel like I have been gone for sooooooo long! I started preparations for the RAW MOM SUMMIT 4 months ago, and have been such a busy bee all this time. It was such a whirlwind of wonder and expansion for me.

Shannon LeoneMy whole family had to work with me and my new schedule to assist me and so it was really a learning curve for us all. There were missed bedtimes and school drop-offs and pick-ups (we walk through the forest to school and I wasn’t able to for much of those months) so some independence was gained! And there were some really strange dinners a few too many nights- thankfully I find it easy to keep to my GREEN SMOOTHIES daily for the family, and on weekends a green juice, plus a salad every day!

But GONE were the lovely almond milks, the raw desserts or gourmet meals…I haven’t seen my Tae Kwon Do Dojang either, and my legs have felt so stiff and unhappy sitting on this chair for up to 12 hours without a break day after week after month.

WOW! Working Moms are INCREDIBLE! Its been so eye opening for me to not just get that intellectually, but to live it.

The support I felt from Tera always carried me through! Not to mention hearing the stories and insights of people I have read and admired for decades- like Dr. BERNIE SEIGEL…I hope you got to hear his call! I listend to it over and over again…He has dealt with life and death with such humour, wisdom and sovereignty and showed the medical community a more human face of cancer. I have always loved him.

The Continuum ConceptAnd Jean Liedloff. Her book THE CONTINUUM CONCEPT was one of my first parenting books I ever read- I actually read it when I was about 20 long before my babies…I had always wanted to hear and read about mothering with wisdom, and this book is a classic. And Jean was such a generous guest to interview. In my excitement I interrupted her with questions and personal anecdotes, and she was so gracious about it all! Her information is SO PRACTICAL, and that is exactly what we moms so badly need!

And BYRON KATIE- How she took me and everyone through that process over the potential death of our children…it was so powerful! I am STILL learning to incorporate her profound words of wisdom IN…It has already made an impact on my anxiety level around my children’s safety and well-being.

Kate MagicI could go on and on- Victoria Boutenko and Vayla blew me away with their wisdom.
So did the kind and masterful Dr. Gabriel Cousens, David Wolfe, Shazzie. And Kate Magic inspired me like crazy- I have started to hand over more than 50% of the food prep to my sons because of her! And I was also inspired by Karen Ranzi’s dedication to her children!

Didn’t you just love SHANTREE? His passion for permaculture and the Earth is so inspiring and moving! And his partner Lorenna- what she shared about sacred relationships and ‘BLISSAPLINES’ was some of the best ideas I have heard anywhere.

Dr. Carolyn Dean and Wayne Gendel always fulfill my insatiable desire to KNOW the FACTS! Their calls were jam-packed with solid content. And so was BRIGETTE MARS’ call! What a treasure trove of fantastic information and ideas she is.

Susun WeedMy call with SUSUN WEED was perhaps most controversial as Susun is known for her anti-raw ideas- but people misinterpret that I think. She really just doesn’t advocate any diet over any other as she embraces everything in the tradition of the WISE WOMAN WAY. And she doesn’t believe we are ‘toxic’ and need to constantly ‘cleanse’ and purify- she believes we are already perfect and whole. I honestly feel that is wisdom, because we need to NOURISH ourselves as she says, and we tend to over-indulge and then cleanse which can be so depleting. There is so much to be gained by embracing different perspectives, and just taking what works for you at any given point on your journey.

ALL OF THE GUESTS SPEAKERS did us a beautiful service. The message over and over again was to relax, go at your own pace, do what feels intrinsically right for YOU and your family. Raw foods feels optimal in terms of nourishment for me, but so does herbal infusions. It isn’t about judging ourself or our diet or anyone else’s. It isn’t about making our homes and dinner tables filled with tension and strive. Just the opposite.

The living foods lifestyle is a path of harmony and flow. Of nourishment and grace. Of love and goodness. And it is just a choice, another beautiful choice we GET to make.

I learned so much from the RAW MOM SUMMIT. I feel transformed. Softened. Calmer. More grounded in my own wisdom.

I truly hope you all received some beautiful life-long pearls too.

Raw Mom, Cooked Dad

As I write this, we are just an hour away from the official kick off of our Raw Mom Summit and whooooooa, what a ride! Amazing to have over 5000 people sign up in about a week and a half. We’re thrilled with the support and enthusiasm that we’ve received and know that this is juuuuust the start of what is to come. It’s not too late to tell people about it. Better catch some of the action, than none at all!!

If you’re here and you’re ready for the ride, then get your seat belt on, Darlin’, cuz it’s only going to get better from here. Shannon and I have been giggling and soaking up our Sisterhood all day today by planning the next big adventure. For now, we’ll have to keep some of it hush, hush, but what we can tell you about, is our upcoming book, Raw Mom, Cooked Dad! I’m bursting with enthusiasm about this book and so looking forward to sharing it with you.

I was finally catching up on the Diva blog this afternoon and wrote some of my thoughts about this book andhow I feel about it. While the book is designed to offer a lot of support to people who are trying to make it work on the raw food diet in a cooked food family, it addresses everything from attitude and emotional environments to how to make knock-out lasagna better than Mama Mia’s family favorite!

So, taken from the diva blog, here are a few of my thoughts on the subject:

Raw Mom, Cooked Dad

This is a book I’ve been working on with Shannon Leone. It’s nearing completion and not a moment too soon. I’ve been so challenged and fascinated with my new relationship with Mr. Right these days, that the timing could not have been more perfect for me to be writing this book. If a cooked dad could be cooked, this guy’s barbqued, Baby! Meaty lasagna, wheaty bread and blue cheese. It’s almost surreal to watch myself in relationship to this person. I mean, I would have expected, insisted, suspected… something! that I fall in love with someone who eats the way I do and who understands and values the same nutritional principles I do. But we’re virtually speaking foreign tongues when it comes to food and it CHALLENGES ME SOOOOOO MUCH.

I love it.

I’ve only ever wanted to do the things that make the world a better place. I’ve only ever wanted to find a way to get this message out to the world in a way that is approachable, accessible and friendly. I laughed so hard the other day when he explained that he was proud of himself for accepting me as I am–weird and highly unusual. I laughed because I thought I was the one being tolerant and accepting!!!

It’s like relearning I’m being forced to relearn this whole lifestyle all over again. I watch my food-obsessed circuits play themselves while he sits smiling and wolfing down meaty lasagna telling me about the time he was soooo sick with a hangover and this meaty lasagna made him feel so much better, this food is practically therapeutic for him! I heard him justify the therapeutic value of “protein” and “calcium” and all the other hearty nutrients in food that I would consider unsuitable for human consumption.

I sit with a half-dazed look on my eyes while thoughts spit themselves out on the sidewalk of my mind:

“Doesn’t he KNOW the amount of carcingens in that thing?”

“Doesn’t he KNOW what that DOES to a person, to eat that way?”

“What about the animals!?!”

“What about the hydrogenated fats and opiate receptors in the brain?”

Doesn’t he GET IT that this food is killing him??!!!

At it is at precisely that moment that I am forced to take a few steps back from my own head and examine the carcinogenic nature of my thought processes.

Oprah touches the lives of millions of people every day. Does anyone reeeeally care that she eats chicken fingers at night? If I had a dollar for all the hours I’ve protested against the consumption of animals, I’d buy myself a book on nonviolent communication. The annihilation of chicken fingers won’t make the world a better place before honesty, truth and integrity does.

I don’t know how to teach people to care for the planet, to love and respect animal life until we empower and lift them up enough to value and respect their own life. I think, sometimes, we’ve got it backwards around here. We’re shouting out in the name of environmental awareness and frowning at fast food, but what if…

What if we all spent a bit more time validating the good we see in the world instead of complaining about what’s wrong with it?

What if we all spent a bit more time telling the truth (with love and respect) about how we feel and what we think, even if we’re afraid it might hurt to do so?

What if we kept less secrets and talked behind backs less so we could sit and exchange eye contact with mutual respect and admiration?

Without divulging too much of my own personal relationship goofups, I admit that I’ve tempted to date destiny in the form of a few raw food gurus a time or two with little success. To find myself crazy in love with the prosciutto-eating King of Sandwiches (as he likes to call myself), well, you can imagine my cerebral circuitry has been doing quite a marvelous dance of discovery these days.

I’m challenged to see the world in a different way.

I’m challenged to accept the idea that there’s more to life than what meets the eye. I always knew it, believed it to be true and now am being forced to PROVE IT!

So, until someone would like to measure the carcinogens in anger, hostility, hatred, ignorance, dishonesty and disgust, then I’m not convinced “raw food” is the answer to all our ills. Until someone can convince me that my thoughts are not responsible for the way I perceive my life and how I live it, then I’m putting more attention on love and affection than meaty lasagna.

As you can see, I’m pretty passionate and super excited about this book coming out and will be talking a lot more about it. Stay tuned, Snuggle puff! I admit I had a little something to do with it. ;-) But I do mean, “a little”. I simply whispered the idea of a “Raw Mom Summit” in Shannon’s ear and she strapped on wings and flew, flew, flew until this week when we released the Raw Mom Summit.

It’s brilliant and beautiful.
